9' x 12' Sino Tabriz Oriental Rug | Ivory All Over Floral Design | Wool with Silk Accents

This is a Sino-Tabriz: woven by hand in China from a Tabriz floral cartoon, on a cotton foundation, in wool with a touch of silk. The pile is clipped low at 3/8", which keeps the drawing crisp, and the silk passes sit brighter than the wool around them so the flowers shift as you walk past. It is brand new and never used, with tight selvedges, square corners and full ivory fringe at both ends. Design and Motifs

The field is an all over floral in the Tabriz manner rather than a hard medallion layout, though a loose diamond of larger palmettes gathers at the center and reads as a soft medallion from across the room. Thin vine scrolls curve out from it and carry rosettes, 8 petal daisies, serrated lotus heads, tulip-like buds and small leaf sprays, all drawn in mirror image across both the long and short axes, so the 4 corners resolve cleanly instead of running off the edge. The border is a 3 band system: a wide main band of alternating large palmettes and rose bouquets joined by a running vine, framed inside and out by narrow guard stripes of repeating flower heads on a darker ground. Close up, image 8 shows how much detail sits in a single repeat, with feathered petal edges and outlined leaves that only hold together at a fine knot count and a short pile.

The Ivory and Burgundy Color Palette

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to champagne than to white, and it runs unbroken through both the field and the main border so the rug reads as one continuous light surface. Against it the flowers are built in three strengths of red: true burgundy at the hearts of the large palmettes, a softer brick rose in the mid-size blooms, and pale blush pink in the small scattered buds. The leaves and vine work are sage and olive green, dulled just enough to sit back. Tortilla brown and taupe carry the guard stripes and the outer frame line, and the same brown shades up into camel and pale gold in the bigger palmettes. Small dark navy centers punctuate a number of the flower heads, which is what keeps a pale rug from going flat. The silk highlights fall mostly on the petal edges and vine tips, so the pinks and creams pick up light while the greens and browns stay matte.

Woven in China in the Tabriz Tradition

Chinese workshops have been weaving to classical Tabriz cartoons for decades, and the better ones do it properly: hand-knotted on a cotton warp and weft, wool pile with silk accents, drawn from a full-scale cartoon rather than a simplified grid. The curved line is the test, and this rug passes it, with vine scrolls that stay smooth through their arcs and petal outlines that do not step. The back, shown in image 10, has the even, regular knot rows of a well-tensioned loom.
