13' x 19'6" Persian Tabriz Rug | Wool & Silk All-Over Floral | Approx. 500 KPSI, Never Used

This is a full palace piece, 13' x 19'6" of hand-knotted wool and silk on a silk foundation, woven at roughly 500 knots per square inch in the Tabriz workshop manner. It has never been on a floor: the pile still stands full and square, the fringe is untrimmed, and the reverse is crisp enough to read the drawing knot for knot. Rugs of this footprint in this grade of weave are made to order and rarely released unused, which is what puts this one in a different conversation from most oversize Persian rugs of the same dimensions. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field is a continuous all-over composition of large palmettes, open rosettes, lotus heads and serrated acanthus leaves carried on a thin scrolling vine that never breaks across the full 19'6" length. The drawing is mirrored along both axes, so the pattern reads as one design rather than a repeated tile, and at close range the small details declare the weave: tiny buds, curled leaf tips and split arabesques that only hold their shape above 400 knots per square inch. The rug is framed by a triple border, a broad gold main band of paired palmettes and vase-like flower clusters, flanked by sage green guard stripes of pink blossoms and a slim pink rosette meander at each side. A narrow ruby outer guard with a row of small pointed cartouches closes the composition against the ivory fringe.

A Deep Ruby Red Field with Gold, Sage and Pink

The ground is a deep ruby red with a slight blue undertone, closer to garnet than to brick, and the silk in the pile makes it shift from dark wine to a lit crimson as you walk around it. Against that field the ornament is drawn almost entirely in pale tones: ivory, oyster, soft celadon, olive and pistachio green, dusty rose and lilac, with small accents of navy and teal at the flower centers that keep each motif legible. The main border reverses the scheme onto a warm gold ground, where the same palmettes appear in pink, mauve, cream and deep green, and the sage guard stripes cool the transition between the gold and the red. Silk is used selectively on petal edges and leaf spines, so the highlights sit brighter than the wool around them under lamplight.

Tabriz Origin and Weaving Quality

Tabriz in northwest Persia is the city that industrialized fine Persian weaving without losing the court drawing tradition, and its best workshops still measure themselves in Raj, the count of knots taken across the width. At approximately 500 knots per square inch on a silk foundation, this piece sits well above commercial Tabriz production and in the range where curved lines stay smooth and small floral heads keep their outlines. A silk warp is thinner and stronger than cotton, which is what allows the knot count to climb and gives the rug its flat, even handle and precise straight edges over such a long span. The wool is dense and clipped low so the pattern reads sharply, and with the pile completely unworn this rug is starting its life rather than continuing someone else's.
