6'10" x 7' Persian Sarouk Square Rug | Sky Blue Floral Field | Coral Rosette Medallion | Circa 2000

Almost nothing about this piece is ordinary. It is square rather than rectangular, it measures 6'10" x 7', and instead of the deep red ground that most Persian Sarouk rugs are known for, the field is a clear sky blue. It was hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation around the year 2000, the pile is full and even across the whole surface, and the condition is excellent with the original ivory fringes intact at both ends. True square Persian rugs are woven in small numbers, which is exactly why they are so hard to find when a room actually calls for one. Design and Motifs

The center holds a coral 8 petal rosette medallion, each petal outlined in navy, built around a cream rosette core with small red blossoms turning inside it. Radiating out from that center are pairs of feathered floral fans and rounded clusters of tiny rosettes, and beyond them the field fills with detached flowering sprays, carnations, curling serrated leaves and a few small footed vases along the lower field. The drawing is mirrored across both axes, so the square reads the same from every side of the room, which is a practical virtue in a rug this shape. Ivory spandrels carrying cusped palmette arabesques anchor the 4 corners. The main border runs a salmon ground with alternating rosettes, cream blossom heads and angular leaves, framed by 4 narrower guard stripes of meandering vine on dark and light grounds.

A Sky Blue Field Against Coral and Cream

Blue is the main color here, a soft cornflower to sky tone that shifts slightly lighter and deeper as the wool catches the light from different angles, the way good hand-dyed wool always does. Against it the florals read in brick red, coral, rose and warm brown, with cream and beige blossoms scattered through the field to keep the pattern from going heavy. Navy blue does the outlining work around the medallion petals, the vase forms and the innermost border, sharpening every shape. The salmon main border and the ivory corner spandrels lift the whole composition and give the eye somewhere to rest, while a teal blue selvage finishes both long sides. It is a cooler, lighter palette than collectors expect from this design family, and it sits easily with pale oak or bleached floors, the surface the rug is photographed on here.

Sarouk Weaving and Build Quality

Sarouk weaving comes out of the Arak region of central Persia, a group of villages and town workshops that built their reputation on heavy, honest construction and dense floral drawing rather than on ultra fine knotting. That character is visible on the back of this one: tight rows of asymmetric knots on a cotton warp and weft, a compact handle with real weight to it, and clean straight edges with no bowing across the 6'10" width. The wool is springy and has taken a light sheen where the pile has been walked and brushed, a sign of good fleece rather than wear. Built this way, a Sarouk is a working floor rug, the kind that takes chairs pushed back from a square table or daily traffic in a sitting room for decades without thinning.
