6'2" x 8'8" Persian Tribal Pictorial Rug | Village Garden Scene | Hand-Spun Wool, Excellent Condition
Most rugs repeat a pattern. This one shows you a place. Across a camel colored field the weaver laid out a whole village: two flowering trees in full bloom, a blue mountain rising behind an arcaded building, tiled roofs drawn in diagonal red lattice, and oil lamps set into the four corners like lanterns left burning. It is a genuine tribal piece, hand-knotted in wool with a 3/8" pile, finished at both ends with the striped flatwoven kilim skirt that village looms produce and factory workshops do not. At 6'2" x 8'8" it sits right in the most usable range of 6x9 Persian rugs, large enough to anchor a seating group yet small enough to hang on a wall as the picture it really is. Condition is excellent, the pile is even across the whole field, and the rug ships with our certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The scene is built symmetrically from the center out. At the heart sits a long low building with 3 arched doorways, fronted by a row of orange and olive cypress trees and topped by a dark blue peak speckled with gold, the weaver's shorthand for a mountain under evening light. On either side a blossoming tree spreads in red and ivory checkered flowers over purple branches, with an 8 pointed star floating between them. Two broad pitched roofs fill the lower corners in diagonal brick-red hatching, and small details reward close looking: shuttered windows, tiny human and animal figures, a pair of candles on red stands, and single rosettes tucked into the field corners. The border stack is pure tribal geometry, a wide main band of hooked shield medallions outlined in ivory on a red ground, framed by a camel colored vine band scattered with little rose and lilac blossoms, then narrow reciprocal sawtooth guards.
The Color Story: Camel Ground, Brick Red, Deep Indigo
The field is undyed camel to golden tan, warm and slightly uneven the way natural fleece reads, and it does the hard work of making every other color glow. Against it the roofs and borders run brick red deepening to oxblood and brown, with the richest red and burgundy concentrated in the main band. Indigo and a softer sky blue carry the mountain, the cypress ground and the guard stripes, while chalk ivory outlines nearly every motif and keeps the drawing legible. Accents arrive in small, confident doses: coral orange on the arches and trees, aubergine and lilac on branches and blossoms, saffron gold, olive green, and a dusty rose in the vine border. The flatwoven ends add another palette of their own, with bands of rust, slate, mustard, green and navy. Mild abrash through the camel field and the blue mountain confirms hand-spun, small-lot dyed wool rather than industrial yarn.
Persian Village Weaving and Build Quality
Pictorial rugs like this come from the village and tribal looms of Persia, where a weaver works from memory and sketch rather than a workshop cartoon, which is why the two halves echo each other without matching exactly. That is the appeal: you can see a person's hand in it. The wool is springy, glossy hand-spun yarn, knotted at a comfortable village gauge on a sturdy foundation and beaten down firmly, then finished with the long striped kilim and knotted fringe visible in the fold photos. The 3/8" pile gives it enough body to lie flat without a pad fighting it, and the selvedges are tight and unbroken. Practically speaking, this is a rug you can use daily and still frame later, because the condition is excellent and the narrative design only gets more interesting the longer it is in the room.
