6'2" x 9'7" Ziegler Chobi Oriental Rug | European All Over Design | Ghazni Silky Wool | Brand New

This 6'2" x 9'7" piece is a hand-knotted Oriental rug in the Ziegler Chobi manner, woven in soft honey gold and beige with a coral main border and teal green guard lines. It is brand new and has never been on a floor, yet the drawing, the plant dyed palette and the gentle color movement across the field give it the quiet presence of a much older piece. The pile is Ghazni wool, hand-spun and washed to a low silky luster, set on a cotton foundation with hand-tied ivory fringe at both ends. At 74" by 115" it fits a seating group, a queen bed or a modest dining table without crowding the room. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity that records the weave, materials, origin and measurements.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries an all over design of open arabesque vine scroll, large softened palmettes, curling serrated leaves and small 5 petal rosettes, drawn loosely enough that the ground breathes between the motifs. The pattern is mirrored across the long axis and repeats at a generous scale, which is what makes the European room style work: seen from a doorway it reads as texture and warmth rather than as a busy picture. The main border holds a chain of big coral cartouche palmettes with ivory hearts, alternating with paler leaf forms, and is framed inside and out by narrow teal green guard stripes and a thin barber pole minor band. The corners are resolved cleanly, with the border motif turning without being cut short, a detail that separates carefully cartooned weaving from quick commercial work.

A Palette of Honey Gold, Coral and Teal Green

The ground moves between pale beige and warm honey gold, with faint vertical striations of abrash where the hand-spun yarn took the dye at slightly different strengths. That variation is the signature of plant dyed wool and it is why the field never looks flat under lamplight. Over it the vines are drawn in deeper caramel and old gold, with accents of coral, terracotta and a few small notes of dark brick red at the palmette centers. The border reads as a soft muted coral rather than a hot red, and it is cooled by the teal green guard lines, the blue green tendrils scattered through the field and the small teal rosettes tucked into the corners. Ivory and cream highlights lift the whole thing. It is a warm neutral rug that sits comfortably with oak floors, cream plaster, camel leather and brass, and it will not fight a room that already has pattern in it.

Ziegler Chobi Weaving and Ghazni Wool

Chobi weaving takes its name from the plant and vegetable dyes used for the yarn, and the Ziegler style refers to the softened, open floral cartoons the Ziegler house developed in the late 19th century for European drawing rooms. That tradition is carried on today in the workshops of Pakistan, where this rug was knotted by hand on a cotton warp, knot by knot, then clipped to a medium pile and given a soft wash. The wool is Ghazni, a long staple highland fleece prized for its natural sheen and its resistance to crushing; the back photograph shows an even, well packed weave with straight, disciplined rows and a firm dark brown selvedge. It is a rug built to be walked on, and the combination of durable fleece, honest dyes and a room sized 6'2" x 9'7" footprint makes it one of the most practical hand-knotted formats we stock.
