6'5" x 12'10" Persian Tabriz Wide Gallery Rug | Black Wool & Silk All-Over Floral | Brand New
This 6'5" x 12'10" Persian Tabriz is a wide gallery piece, longer and narrower than a room rug but far too wide to be treated as an ordinary corridor strip, which makes it one of the more useful shapes in the trade for long halls, galleries and narrow living spaces. It is brand new and never used, hand-knotted in wool with silk worked into the highlights, on a cotton foundation with the original ivory fringe intact at both ends. The pile stands at about 1/4", short enough to hold the fine drawing of the field without blurring it. Buyers who need this proportion usually search among long Persian gallery runners and find very little of this quality in the format. Every rug we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity stating origin, materials and measurements.
Design and Motifs
The black field carries an all-over floral repeat rather than a central medallion, built from rows of rosettes and eight petal blossoms locked between curling lancet leaves, a drawing family Tabriz weavers work in the Mahi Herati tradition. Look closely at the field photograph and the repeat resolves into small lattice compartments, each one holding a paired leaf and a flower head, with fine tendrils running diagonally to tie the rows together. Around it sit at least 7 concentric bands: narrow reciprocal guard stripes, a camel ground meander, and a wide main border of large ivory and gold palmettes flanked by boteh style curled leaves that turn cleanly at all 4 corners. The inner ends of the field are closed with matching horizontal panels, so the gallery format reads as a finished composition from either direction rather than a length of pattern cut to size.
A Black Ground Lit by Green, Rust and Silk
Color is what carries this piece. The ground is a deep black that pushes everything laid on it forward: olive and moss green leaves, rust and terracotta blossom centers, soft blues in the smaller flower heads, and ivory rosettes that read almost white against the dark wool. The borders shift to a warm camel and dusty rose register, which keeps the overall effect formal rather than heavy, and the reciprocal guard stripes alternate cream and black for a crisp outline. Where the silk sits in the leaves and the palmette petals it catches light at an angle, so walking the length of the rug changes the greens from dark to luminous and back. The palette works over dark wood, walnut parquet and stone alike, and the black ground is genuinely practical in a busy hall.
Tabriz Weaving and the Quality of This Piece
Tabriz in northwest Persia has been the country's most commercially disciplined weaving center for well over a century, and its workshops are measured in Raj, the count of knots per gereh across the width, where 40 Raj is commercial work, 50 is fine and 60 or more is collector territory. This rug sits in the fine end of that scale: the ruler photograph shows a tight, even knot count with small, controlled nodes and a perfectly straight selvage, which is why the curved leaf tips and the tiny flower centers stay legible at 1/4" pile. The wool is dense and springy with silk reserved for accents, the back is flat and regular, and the ends are finished with an even ivory cotton fringe. It has never been laid, so the pile is at full height and the colors are exactly as they left the loom.
