6' x 10' Indian Chobi Rug | Burgundy All-Over Floral Vine | Hand-Knotted Wool | Brand New
This is a brand new, never used 6' x 10' Chobi hand-knotted in India, with a 3/8" wool pile worked on a cotton foundation. It is the kind of Oriental rug that does the quiet work in a room: a dark field that hides traffic, a bright border that lifts the whole piece, and drawing clean enough to read from across the floor. The 6 by 10 footprint is the useful in-between size, long enough to carry a sofa and a pair of chairs without the rug disappearing under the furniture. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted, and the photographs here were taken of this exact piece, including the back tag numbered 74198.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion. Instead the field carries a true all-over floral composition built on a thin gold vine that climbs the length of the rug and throws off palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, serrated acanthus leaves and small curling split leaves. Look closely at the detail shots and you can see how the weaver alternated scale: large crowned palmettes anchor the repeat, mid-size blossoms fill between them, and tiny 4 petal buds close the gaps so no part of the ground reads empty. The field is framed by a wide ivory main border of alternating palmettes and green leaves, set between narrow rust and gold guard stripes and an outer burgundy edge. All 4 corners are resolved properly, with the border pattern turning rather than running off, which is the first thing to check on any hand-knotted floral.
A Burgundy Field Framed in Ivory and Gold
The main color is a deep burgundy that shades toward dark purple and aubergine where the light falls differently across the pile, a natural variation in hand-spun wool rather than any flaw. Against that ground the florals are drawn in gold, tan and rust, with cream and ivory highlights on the larger blossoms and small touches of sage green in the leaves. Scattered blue green centers inside the palmettes give the pattern depth without introducing a cool cast. The ivory main border is the brightest element in the rug, warm rather than white, closer to a pale honey, and it is what keeps a dark field from reading heavy. In a room with walnut or dark stained floors the burgundy sinks in and the ivory border draws the outline; against lighter oak or stone the contrast reverses and the field becomes the focal point.
Chobi Weaving and Made in India
Chobi describes a family of softly colored, classically drawn florals that modern workshops have made their own, and India is now where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is produced. We say that with confidence after decades of buying there: the better Indian ateliers run well-trained benches, spin their own wool, and hold a line and a corner as tightly as any traditional weaving center. On this piece the knotting is even enough for the vine to stay thin and continuous across 10 feet, the selvedges are tight and well wrapped, and the fringe is original and untouched. The 3/8" pile is dense and springy underfoot, built for real daily use rather than for a display wall, and because the rug is brand new, the full service life of the wool is still ahead of it.
