This 8'8" x 13'4" Zigler Chobi is a new, never used piece, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with the soft handspun yarn and gently muted palette that made the Chobi weave the most copied traditional look of the last thirty years. The field is a deep burgundy carrying a continuous floral vine in beige, cream and olive green, framed by a wide camel-beige main border. Pile depth is generous, the wool has a quiet sheen rather than a bright one, and the drawing stays relaxed instead of mechanical, so the rug reads as a workshop piece and not a machine copy. At just over 13 feet long it sits squarely in the category of large hand-knotted rugs that can hold a full seating group or a 10 seat table. Design and Motifs

The drawing is a classic Sultanabad style all-over floral design with no central medallion, so the pattern repeats calmly in every direction and the rug can be turned without the layout fighting the room. Thin vine stems wander across the field and carry three recurring elements: large 8 petal rosettes drawn in cream with a burgundy center, broad serrated leaves that lean and curl like acanthus, and lobed palmettes set in vertical rhythm down the middle of the field. Small buds, curled cloud tendrils and single leaves fill the gaps so no area of the burgundy ground is left empty. The main border runs a linked palmette and vine on the beige ground, punctuated by tiny burgundy 4 point florets, and is fenced on both sides by narrow guard stripes of a running rosette and bracket motif. The corner resolutions in the border are worked out properly rather than cut off, which is the detail that separates a good Chobi from an ordinary one.

A Burgundy Field Softened by Beige and Olive Green

The field is a warm, slightly wine-toned burgundy that shifts across the width as the handspun wool takes dye unevenly, giving the ground a subtle abrash rather than one flat block of red. Against it, the vinework is drawn in a chalky beige that lifts toward cream on the rosette petals and drops to a dusty apricot where the wool is heavier. Olive green is the third voice, used on the serrated leaves and in the border vine, and it cools the whole palette down so the red never becomes loud. The wide border reads as camel to light gold depending on the light, with faint sage and soft rose accents in the palmettes and small deep-burgundy florets repeating along its length. The outer edge and the selvage return to solid burgundy, and the fringe is natural ivory. Origin and Weaving Quality

Zigler, also spelled Ziegler, was originally a 19th century commission house that had classical floral designs woven in central weaving villages for the western market. Today that same drawing is woven by hand in Pakistan, where the Chobi tradition around Peshawar and Lahore pairs handspun local wool with washed, low-contrast dyes, and it is some of the most consistent traditional hand-knotted work being produced anywhere. This piece shows it in the fundamentals: a straight, square handle, even knot rows visible on the folded-back photograph, tightly worked selvages and a heavy cotton warp that lets the rug lie flat without a fight. It is an Oriental rug in the proper sense of the term, knotted one knot at a time on a vertical loom, and at this size that means several months of work by a small team of weavers.
