9'3" x 11'8" Zigler Chobi Rug | Navy Blue All-Over Floral Vine | Hand-Knotted Organic Wool, New
This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Zigler Chobi measuring 9'3" x 11'8", woven in natural organic wool on a cotton foundation and finished with the thick, slightly glossy pile you can see in the close-up photographs. The deep navy field carries an uninterrupted flowering vine, and the wide camel-tan border does the framing work, so the rug reads as a calm dark rectangle from across a room and only reveals its drawing when you stand over it. At just under 108 square feet it covers a standard 9x12 room size with room for a full seating group or a dining table and 8 chairs. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, with the size, materials and origin recorded.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all over design with no central medallion. Thick brown vine stems rise from the lower border and branch into large lotus palmettes, each one drawn as a fan of rust and ivory petals around a small stepped cartouche at the center. Between them sit smaller boteh style buds, split leaf pairs and clusters of 4 or 5 loose blossoms, with broad serrated acanthus leaves in olive and camel filling the negative space. The drawing is deliberately bold and slightly angular rather than finely curvilinear, which is what gives a Chobi its antique look at a decorative knot count. The main border repeats an alternating sequence of a red 8 petal rosette and an upright fan shaped palmette, separated by small navy leaves and ivory sprigs, and it is bracketed on both sides by a twisted rope guard stripe in rust and ivory that reads almost like a barber pole. The corners are resolved cleanly, with the border pattern turning rather than being cut off.
Navy Blue, Rust and Camel Brown
The ground is a dark indigo navy that shifts with the light, going nearly black where the pile lies away from you and opening into a clear mid blue where it lies toward you, an abrash movement visible in the angled photographs and the rolled edge detail. Against it the palmettes are built from three warm tones: a soft terracotta rust, a dusty camel brown and an ivory to pale wheat that acts as the highlight. Leaf work adds a muted olive green, and small accents of deep brick red punctuate the border rosettes. The wide main border is the warm counterweight, a light camel brown with a pinkish cast that keeps the navy from feeling heavy, and the outer edge returns to navy so the whole composition is contained. It is a two temperature palette, cool center and warm frame, which makes it easy to place with walnut and oak furniture, brass, leather, or with cream and charcoal upholstery.
Zigler Chobi Weaving in Pakistan
Zigler Chobi rugs are woven in Pakistan, and this is where a great deal of the world's best hand-knotted decorative work is produced today. Chobi means wood, a reference to the plant and wood based dyeing the style is known for, and the wool is hand-spun so the yarn takes color unevenly and produces the gentle striation you see across the navy field. This is a decorative quality weave rather than a workshop fine weave, which is exactly right for a room size floor piece: a heavier knot, a fuller pile and a rug that takes traffic, furniture legs and years of use without thinning. The cotton foundation keeps it flat and square, the selvedges are wrapped tight and the ends are secured, all signs of careful finishing. If you are weighing this against other traditions, our guide on what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug explains where each style sits.
