6' x 6' Chinese Dom Rug | Silk | Round
A round rug measuring 6' x 6', hand-knotted in silk in China. Laid flat it reads as a dome seen from underneath: a small rosette at the dead centre, then ring after ring of panels opening outward to a scalloped edge with ivory fringe carried the whole way around the circumference.
The design
The Dom design is built entirely from concentric rings rather than a field and a medallion. At the centre a tiny rosette sits inside a dark starburst, which spreads into a wide sunburst of lancet points in caramel and blue, each point filled with its own vine. Beyond that comes a ring of tall ivory arch panels, each holding a slender flowering stem, and then a band of arcaded compartments in blue, the arches outlined in ivory pearl borders with a single palmette at the springing point. The outer border is a brown strip of scrolling rosettes between narrow olive guard stripes, and the final ring of panels alternates blue and ivory ground before the scalloped selvage. Every ring is drawn tight enough that the detail in image 6, small four-petal flowers no wider than a fingernail, stays legible at floor level.
The colour
Two temperatures carry the rug. The blue runs from a deep peacock in the arch grounds to a pale sky in the smaller scrolls, and it sits against broad passages of ivory that shade into caramel and warm tan through the sunburst. The brown border is close to cinnamon, with green guard stripes in a dry olive tone and rosettes picked out in rose pink and burgundy. Because the pile is silk, the blues darken or lighten depending on which way the nap faces, which is why the rug photographs cooler from one side than the other.
The making
Hand-knotted in China with a silk pile on a fine scale, which is what allows the ring-within-ring drawing to hold its shape around a circle rather than breaking up at the curve. The pile is clipped low and has the flat sheen silk gives, visible along the border in image 5. The rug is new and in perfect condition, with full pile, even edges and the fringe intact all round.
