6' x 9' Chinese Aubusson Design Rug | Black Field, Rose Floral Medallion and Grapevine Border

Black grounds are uncommon in handmade floor work, and this 6' x 9' piece shows exactly why weavers reach for one: the ivory, rose and sage drawing sits on the surface like painted porcelain. It is a hand-knotted wool rug made in China in the Aubusson idiom, the French floral tradition of bouquets, trailing vines and open fields, and it reads as a decorative Oriental rug rather than a tribal or village weave. The pile is low and even, the condition is excellent with no repairs visible in the photographs, and the proportions make it one of the easiest 6x9 rugs to place in a formal room. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The composition is built on a single central bouquet set inside an unframed oval of bare black field, so the eye goes straight to the flowers with nothing competing. In the close view you can count full blown cabbage roses, tight buds, a pomegranate and a pineapple crowning the top of the spray, with feathered acanthus leaves fanning out behind them. Instead of a conventional ruled border, the design uses a wide wreath of grapevine that runs right around the field: trailing tendrils, broad 5 lobed maple and vine leaves, and heavy clusters of grapes hanging at intervals. The 4 corners carry the largest leaf groups, which anchors the drawing and keeps the open field from looking empty. Small detached sprigs drift inward from the vine toward the medallion, a softening device typical of Aubusson drawing, and the whole pattern is asymmetrical enough in its detail to look drawn rather than stamped.

A Black Field Carrying Rose, Cream and Sage

The ground is a deep, flat black with no abrash or streaking, and it does the work of a gallery wall for everything placed on it. The floral palette is deliberately muted: antique rose and dusty crimson in the open roses, soft blush pink in the grape clusters, pale butter cream and ivory through the leaf tips, sage and olive green in the foliage, with warm tan and camel shading where the leaves turn. The grapes are the one place the color concentrates, moving from pink through to a creamy white bunch, and the medallion is the one place where the reds deepen to a true burgundy. This combination makes the rug far more flexible than most black and ivory rugs, since it bridges cool black-and-white interiors and warmer rooms with cream upholstery or mahogany furniture.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Chinese workshops have produced Aubusson and Savonnerie designs for the European and American decorative trade for decades, and the best of that output is genuine hand work on a cotton foundation with a wool pile, which is what this rug is. The drawing here is the tell: curved stems that keep their line, leaves shaded across 3 and 4 tones, and grape clusters built bead by bead rather than blocked in. The pile is clipped low, which is what allows that level of detail to read clearly, and the selvage visible at the folded corner is clean and tight with no loose edges. Floral Aubusson work is judged on shading and on how convincingly the flowers sit above the ground, and on both counts this one holds up at close range as well as it does from across the room.
