9' x 12' Aubusson Oriental Rug | Ivory Floral Field | Oval Rose Medallion, Rustic Red Border

This 9' x 12' room size piece is a hand-woven interpretation of the French Aubusson style, made in China in wool on a cotton foundation and finished with a very low, closely clipped surface that lets the drawing read almost like a painted tapestry. It is a quiet, formal Oriental rug built around one oval rose bouquet, four corner sprays and a rustic red frame, and it sits comfortably in the standard 9 x 12 area rug footprint most formal rooms are laid out for. Condition is excellent, with full even surface, straight sides and clean ends, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is entirely handmade.

Design and Motifs

The center holds an upright oval reserve filled with a loose bouquet of open roses, buds and small blossoms tied with a ribbon, ringed first by a narrow laurel wreath of overlapping leaves and then by a thin rose colored line that pulls the whole medallion forward. The ivory field around it is not empty: it carries a fine repeating leaf tracery, tone on tone, that gives the surface texture without competing with the flowers. Four large bouquets sit at the corners of the field and two more anchor the long sides, each one drawn with the same soft realism, and a scalloped bracket outline in red curves around the field like a cartouche. The main border is a solid rustic red band carrying a running vine of roses and leaves, interrupted at the center of each side and at the 4 corners by big gold acanthus palmettes with scrolling leaves and ribbon bows. Outside that, a set of narrow striped and dentil guard bands in gold and cream closes the rug, and a plain red outer edge finishes it.

A Palette of Ivory, Antique Gold, Sage Green and Rustic Red

Color is the reason this design works. The ground is a warm ivory that leans toward cream and light champagne rather than white, so it never looks cold against wood flooring. The roses are worked in three distinct pinks, from a deep dusty rose at the heart of each flower out to a pale blush and finally to an almost white petal edge, with small cream and buttermilk blossoms scattered between them. Foliage runs from a soft sage to a deeper olive and a muted moss, all of it lowered in intensity so the greens sit back behind the pink. The acanthus scrollwork and the guard stripes are antique gold shading to honey and tan, and the main border is a rustic brick red with a faintly brownish cast, the kind of red that reads terracotta in daylight and deepens under lamplight. Aubusson takes its name from the French town whose workshops supplied floor and wall pieces to 18th century European interiors, and the style has been made by hand in Chinese workshops for decades now, in wool on cotton, for buyers who want that European drawing at a realistic price. The demand this design places on a weaver is different from a geometric one: every petal is a curve, every leaf turns, and the shading within a single rose may call for 4 or 5 closely related tones, so the workshop has to carry a large color range and change yarns constantly.
