7'7" x 9'6" Ziegler Oriental Rug | Gold Field, Sage Green Rosettes | New Hand-Knotted Wool
Quiet, hand-spun and completely unused, this 7'7" x 9'6" Ziegler is the kind of neutral Oriental rug people buy once and keep through three sets of furniture. The field is an earthy gold that shifts in daylight, the drawing is a soft sage green, and the 5/16" wool pile is low enough to sit under a dining table or a sofa leg without fighting the room. It falls into the practical 8x10 Oriental rugs range, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation, and ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted piece.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The soft horizontal banding and the lighter, hazier passages you see across the gold field in the overhead photos are abrash, the natural tonal shift that happens when hand-spun wool is dyed in small batches, together with light catching the pile from one direction. This is not wear, not fading and not damage. The rug is brand new and never used, and it is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion here. Instead the weaver filled the whole ground with a loose all over floral design: ranks of 8 petal star rosettes, each with a small rounded center, linked by thin vines, serrated leaves and half-drawn palmettes that float rather than lock together. The spacing is generous, which is what keeps a design this busy from reading as busy. Three bands frame the field, a wide main border carrying an alternating palmette and tulip-like vase motif, an inner chain of linked rosette discs, and narrow outer guard stripes of running scroll, with the 4 corners resolved cleanly where the border turns. The ivory selvage and short plain fringe seen in the corner photo finish it without ornament.
A Gold Field With Sage Green Drawing
The palette is deliberately low-contrast. The ground runs from a warm wheat gold to a deeper camel in the banded passages, and against it the rosettes and vines are drawn in a muted celadon to sage green, the kind of green that reads almost grey from across a room and only shows its color up close. Rosette centers are tiny spots of peach and soft rust, the outlines and a few border details are a faded chestnut brown, and ivory highlights lift the leaves and the inner guard stripe. There is no black and no bright color anywhere, so the rug sits easily with oak and walnut floors, grey tile, linen upholstery and warm white walls. Collectors call this the antique-wash look, and it comes from vegetable dyes on hand-spun wool rather than from any surface treatment.
Ziegler Weaving and Where It Is Made Today
The Ziegler vocabulary dates to the 1880s, when a trading company commissioned village workshops to redraw traditional village patterns at a larger, airier scale for Western rooms. The best modern work in that tradition is woven in Pakistan, where weavers still hand-spin the wool, dye it in small batches and knot on a cotton foundation, and this rug is an honest example: Made in Pakistan, brand new, with knotting that stays even from end to end as the back photo shows. The 5/16" pile is dense and tightly packed, the handle is supple rather than stiff, and the wool carries a natural sheen that comes through in the rolled-pile close-up. For a floor that gets daily traffic, that combination of good wool and a low, even pile is worth more than any knot-count claim.
