Design and Motifs

The drawing follows the classic Sarough medallion plan. At the center sits a navy lozenge medallion filled with curling cloudband arms, a small pale rosette at its core and a ring of pink and ivory palmettes, finished top and bottom with slim leafy pendants that reach out into the open ground. The field around it is deliberately quiet, a large expanse of plain salmon that lets the medallion and the 4 corner spandrels carry the composition. Those spandrels are dense with bouquets, curving stems, serrated leaves and turquoise blossoms, and they step inward with a scalloped outline that echoes the medallion shape. Framing everything is a broad navy main border of alternating palmettes and flowering sprays, flanked by narrow guard stripes of light blue boxed rosettes and a fine meandering vine, a layered border system that gives the rug a clear architectural edge on the floor.

A Salmon Red Ground Against Navy and Light Blue

The ground color is a true salmon red, a warm coral-rose that sits between terracotta and dusty pink and shifts slightly toward peach where the light catches the wool. It is the kind of tone that pairs easily with walnut and oak floors, cream walls, brass and warm neutrals, and it softens a room instead of dominating it. Against that ground the designer set a very dark navy, almost inky, in the medallion and the main border, and that contrast is what gives the rug its depth from across the room. Between the two extremes runs a full secondary palette: a clear light blue in the guard stripes and flower heads, ivory and cream in the vinework and fringe, sage and olive green in the leaves, deeper rose and wine in the petals, and small touches of turquoise that flicker in the spandrels and at the medallion tips. The abrash across the open field is minimal, so the salmon reads as one continuous, even color.

Sarough Weaving and Quality

Sarough is a weaving town in the Markazi region of central Persia, north of Arak, and its looms have supplied the American market with formal medallion and floral rugs for well over a century. The house style is a heavy, tightly packed weave: a cotton warp and weft foundation, the asymmetrical Persian knot, and a thick wool pile beaten down hard so the rug sits flat and takes decades of traffic without flattening out. This piece shows all of it. The back photograph, taken with a ruler laid across the weave, shows straight, regular knot rows and clean, disciplined finishing at the end, which is how you tell a genuine town weave from a loose commercial copy.
