7' x 10'2" Persian Sarough Rug | Beige Floral Field with Rust Border | Fine Wool, 1980s
This 7' x 10'2" Sarough was woven in the 1980s and has the calm, confident look that keeps the design in demand: an open golden beige field, a compact rust and navy floral medallion at the center, and a wide terracotta border that holds the whole composition together. The pile is 3/8" fine wool on a cotton foundation, firm and even underfoot with a soft lustre that shifts as the light moves across the field. Condition is excellent, with full pile, straight selvedges and original ivory fringe, and the back shows a tight, regular knot structure typical of good workshop-level Persian Sarough rugs. It ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is deliberately uncrowded. A small 4 lobed medallion sits at the center, built from rust cartouches, curling navy tendrils and a single 8 petal rosette at the heart, with slim pendant finials pointing up and down the length. Above and below it, long feathered leaf sprays and curved vines arch out in mirrored pairs, each one tipped with tulips, carnations and small flowerheads in blue, salmon and sage. Two fan-shaped rosette clusters anchor the ends of the field, and the 4 corners are filled with black-ground spandrels carrying bold palmettes and blue rosettes, the strongest contrast in the rug. The main border runs a continuous scrolling vine of palmettes and lotus blossoms, flanked by narrow guard stripes in navy with a small repeating flower meander. At 7 feet by just over 10 feet it covers a seating group without swallowing it, which is why buyers searching 7x10 Persian rugs keep coming back to this format.
A Golden Beige Field Framed in Rust and Navy
The field is a warm golden beige, closer to camel in the open areas and lifting toward ivory where the wool catches the light. Against it, the border reads as a soft rust orange with an apricot cast, deep enough to frame the rug but never heavy. The detail palette does the real work: inky navy outlines every leaf and stem, a clear light blue fills rosettes and buds, and warm brown, salmon pink, sage green and ivory appear in the flowerheads and palmette cores. Black grounds in the corner spandrels sharpen the whole scheme, and the result is a rug that sits comfortably with cream upholstery, walnut furniture and warm wall color, as the room photo shows. If you are working around neutral walls, it belongs with the best of the beige and ivory Persian rugs we carry.
Sarough Weaving in Central Persia
Sarough takes its name from a village north of Arak in central Persia, and the weavers of that district built their reputation on structure rather than on extreme fineness: a cotton warp and weft, a tightly packed Persian knot, and a short, dense wool pile that resists crushing for generations. This piece follows that tradition closely. The handle is substantial, the back is flat and regular with no pulled corners, and the wool is the hard-wearing, slightly glossy type that polishes with use instead of going dull. Floral Sarough designs with an open ground and a small medallion, like this one, were the central Persian answer to the busier court layouts further east, and they have aged better in Western interiors than almost any other traditional formula.
