7' x 10'5" Persian Sarouk Rug | Navy Blue All-Over Floral Field | Unused 2000s Weave

This is a hand-knotted Persian Sarouk rug woven in the 2000s and never put on a floor, a full room size piece at 7' x 10'5" with a dense wool pile clipped to 3/8" over a cotton foundation. The back photograph, shot against a ruler, shows the tight, even knot rows that give the rug its weight and its crisp drawing. It reads as a serious traditional piece without looking heavy: the navy ground keeps the palette calm while the coral and cream flowers do the talking. Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over floral design, built from detached sprays, curled acanthus leaves, fan palmettes and small 8 petal rosettes that repeat in offset rows so the eye keeps moving. At the center a soft diamond medallion is drawn in ivory and pale teal, filled with scrolling vine and pink blossoms, and it is echoed at the top and bottom of the field by half medallions of the same drawing, which is the classic Sarouk way of implying a medallion without breaking the all-over rhythm. The main border runs a rose red ground with cream and blue flower heads set between leafy arabesques, framed on both sides by teal guard stripes carrying a small running vine, and the outermost guard is a fine ivory ribbon. Corner resolution is clean: the border turns without the pattern stumbling, which is a straightforward test of a good workshop cartoon and this one passes it in all 4 corners.

A Navy Blue Field Lit by Coral and Cream

The ground is a deep navy blue with a slight indigo shift where the light catches the pile, dark enough to hide daily traffic and deep enough to make everything drawn on it glow. The flowers carry the warmth: coral and salmon pink in the blossoms, a cooler rose red in the larger palmettes and in the main border ground, cream and ivory in the leaf outlines and rosette centers, and a soft beige that keeps the ivory from looking stark. Teal and sea green appear in the leaves, the guard stripes and the medallion interior, which is what ties the border back to the field. There is also a scattering of olive and deep aubergine in the smaller details, visible in the close-up photograph. The overall effect is jewel toned rather than bright, so the rug sits comfortably with dark wood, brass, leather and off-white walls, and it does not fight a room that already has pattern in it.

Sarouk Weaving in Central Persia

Sarouk is a weaving village near Arak in central Persia, and for more than a century its name has stood for a particular combination: heavy, tightly packed wool pile, a cotton foundation that holds the rug dead flat, and floral drawing that is curvilinear but never fussy. Sarouk weavers work from a workshop cartoon, which is why the repeats line up and the borders turn correctly, and they beat the wefts down hard, which is why a Sarouk of this size has real heft in the hand and lies without rippling. The wool from this region takes dye deeply and keeps a low sheen that comes up further with use. This example has never been walked on, so the full 3/8" pile and the original clarity of color are intact, and the buyer gets the entire service life of the rug rather than the second half of it.
