7' x 10'6" Persian Tabriz Rug | All-Over Floral on Midnight Navy | 1980s Excellent Condition
Classic Tabriz drawing on a ground so dark it reads almost black, this 7' x 10'6" Persian Tabriz rug was woven in the 1980s and has come through in excellent condition, with an even 3/8" wool pile from one end to the other and clean, straight selvages. The field carries an all-over floral layout instead of a central medallion, which is the practical choice when furniture will sit on the rug: no medallion to bury under a coffee table, and the pattern stays balanced from every seat in the room. It falls into the 7x10 Persian rugs range, a forgiving footprint for a seating group or a table for 6. Every rug leaves our Freeport showroom with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and measurements.
Design and Motifs
The field is built on a system of thin brown vines that branch, curl and double back, hanging rows of blossoms off every turn. Along the center axis sit rounded 8 petal rosettes in light blue and cream with coral hearts, flanked by serrated star palmettes and long lanceolate leaves that lean out toward the border. Larger cream and coral cartouche shaped palmettes with combed, fringed edges anchor the middle of the field, and small coral buds and tendrils fill in whatever space the vines leave open, so the pattern never looks thin. There is no medallion and no corner spandrel: the drawing simply runs out to the inner guard stripe, which is the hallmark of a well planned all-over Tabriz cartoon. The main border repeats a stately sequence of navy medallions with light blue centers, alternating with upright cream and coral floral sprays and paired green leaf fronds. Flanking it are narrow guard stripes, one a sawtooth ivory zigzag, another a chain of small rosettes, and a reciprocal inner band that keeps the 4 corners resolving cleanly.
Color: Midnight Navy Against Coral
The ground is a deep midnight navy blue, dark enough that the flowers appear to float on it, and it is this contrast that makes the rug carry across a large room. The main border is the opposite temperature: a warm coral red with a distinct salmon cast, soft and sunlit next to the field, which is what gives the piece its slightly French, slightly Deco feel rather than the heavier look of a red ground Tabriz. Inside the field the palette is restrained and repeats on purpose. Coral red carries the star palmettes and buds, cream and ivory outline the rosettes and the big combed palmettes, a clear light blue or soft teal fills the round blossom centers, and a cool sage to pine green runs through the leaves and the little leaf fronds in the border. Brown and tan handle the vine work, tying everything back to the warm side of the palette. A gentle abrash moves through the navy in a few places, a quiet shift in depth typical of hand dyed wool and part of the appeal for buyers shopping navy blue Persian rugs. The ivory fringe at both ends is full and tidy.
Tabriz Origin and Weave Quality
Tabriz sits in the northwest of Persia and has the longest unbroken workshop tradition in the country, which is why a Tabriz is drawn from a designer's cartoon rather than from memory, and why the curved vine here stays consistent over more than 10 feet of field. Weavers there count fineness in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of roughly 2.75 inches, and the back of this rug shows a tight, regular grid on a cotton foundation with crisp color breaks and no sloppy outlining, the sign of a competent commercial workshop piece rather than village work. The wool is firm with good spring under the hand, and at 3/8" the pile is short enough to hold the detail of the smaller buds while still giving the rug weight on the floor. The 1980s date puts it in semi-antique territory, with decades of settling already behind it and the color fully mellowed; if you want to understand how weavers, dealers and collectors read age from structure and dyes, see our guide on how to date an Oriental rug.
