8'1" x 11'2" Persian Isfahan Rug | Butter Beige Field, Coral Medallion | Wool & Silk Pile

This is a room-size Persian Isfahan rug measuring 8'1" x 11'2", hand-knotted on a cotton foundation with a 1/4" pile of wool carrying silk in the highlights. The drawing is the reason to own it: a coral medallion with an olive gold core sits on a butter beige field that is filled edge to edge with curved vine, palmettes and small flowerheads, none of it stiff, all of it resolving symmetrically across the 4 quarters of the field. The pile still stands upright with no shading or traffic lanes, the fringes are full and even, and the selvedges are tight, which is why it is graded excellent and like new. It falls squarely into the 8 x 11 Persian rug range that suits most formal rooms without crowding them. A certificate of authenticity is issued with the rug.

Design and Motifs

The composition is a classic Isfahan medallion and field. At the center, a pointed oval cartouche in olive gold holds a small rosette flanked by 4 paired leaf sprays, and that core floats inside a larger coral medallion outlined in navy and ivory with clean pendants at the head and foot. Around it the beige field carries a dense but readable network of scrolling vine, split palmettes, lanceolate leaves and bud clusters, with the same motifs repeated in the spandrels so the corners answer the medallion rather than compete with it. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a wide coral main border of full-blown roses and blue-hearted blossoms joined by a thin vine, framed inside and out by reciprocal flowerhead guard stripes in navy and gold, then a narrow outer meander. The close-up of the back shows the knotting is fine and even enough to draw those curved outlines without a single stepped line.

A Butter Beige Field With Coral, Green and Blue

The ground is a warm butter beige, closer to clotted cream than to white, and the silk in the pile makes it shift between pale ivory and honey as you walk past it. Against that, the medallion and the main border are a soft coral that leans terracotta in shade and salmon in direct light. The medallion core and much of the leafwork are worked in a muted olive and antique gold, which keeps the center from reading as a bright red block. Blue appears in 2 registers: deep navy used as outline on the palmettes, leaf tips and guard stripes, and a chalky powder blue used for whole rose petals in the border and for scattered blossoms in the field. Small touches of rust, brick and ivory fill the remaining flowerheads. The overall effect is warm and low-contrast, which is what makes this palette easy to live with under oak floors, walnut furniture or cream upholstery.

Isfahan Weaving and Quality

Isfahan sits in central Persia and has been a workshop city since the Safavid court established its looms there in the 16th century. Its reputation has never rested on thickness or on bold tribal drawing; it rests on line. A flowing vine, a true curve, a medallion whose 2 halves mirror each other exactly, all of that is only possible at a high knot count on a taut cotton foundation, and that is what Isfahan weavers built their name on. This piece follows that discipline: a short 1/4" pile so the pattern stays crisp, silk worked into the highlights to lift the paler flowerheads off the beige ground, and borders that turn the corners cleanly instead of cutting a motif in half. Examples in this condition, with full pile and no restoration, are the ones worth holding onto.
