8'1" x 11'4" Persian Nain Rug | Navy Blue Medallion, Wool and Silk Pile | 9La Quality, Never Used

This is a piece that has never been on a floor. The 8'1" x 11'4" format is the classic American living room size, and the drawing here is the reason people fall for Persian Nain rugs in the first place: a deep navy ground carrying an unbroken lattice of pale flowering vine, with an ivory oval medallion floating dead center. The pile is wool with silk worked into the outlines, so the highlights catch light at a different angle than the wool around them and the pattern seems to shift as you walk past it. It is a 9La weave on a cotton foundation, finished with a flat ivory kilim end and original fringe. Design and Motifs

The layout is the traditional Nain medallion and corner scheme, drawn with the restraint that separates this town from louder central Persian weaving. At the heart sits a small ivory medallion built around an 8 petal rosette in light blue and beige, ringed by tiny buds and enclosed in a pale lobed cartouche that reads almost like a second, softer field. From it the navy ground opens into a full all over composition of palmettes, rosettes, half open lotus heads and long curled saz leaves, all joined by a hair thin vine that never doubles back on itself. Pendant finials extend above and below the medallion, and the 4 corners repeat the same ivory spandrel drawing so the field resolves cleanly rather than being cut off. The border system is unusually deep for this size: a wide ivory main band of alternating palmettes and scrolling leaf cups, flanked by paired light blue guard stripes of running vine and a narrow beige band of small standing florets. Close inspection shows the little dark garnet dots inside many of the flowerheads, a Nain habit that keeps a mostly cool palette from going flat.

Navy Blue, Ivory and the Cool Blue Accents

Navy blue is the main color and it is a true deep indigo navy, close to black in the shadows of the pile and opening to a clear midnight blue where the light hits the wool directly. Against it every motif is drawn in ivory and cream, with warm beige and a soft mushroom taupe used for the inner petals and leaf bodies. The lightest accents are a powder blue and a slightly stronger sky blue, used for vine tracery, guard stripe flowers and the ring of petals in the center rosette, and it is these blues that read as silk in person. Small touches of deep garnet appear as pinpoints inside the flowerheads, and the outlines are worked in the same navy as the field so the drawing stays crisp at arm's length. The wide border reverses the balance completely, cream and ivory carrying navy figures, which makes the field look darker and the medallion brighter than either would alone. The overall effect is cool, formal and easy to live with: it works against white walls and dark wood, and it does not fight upholstery in gray, taupe, cream or blue.

Nain, and What the 9La Weave Means

Nain sits on the edge of the central desert west of Isfahan, and its weaving tradition is young by Persian standards. When the market for fine cloth collapsed in the 1930s, the town's weavers turned their looms to rugs and brought the Isfahan sense of curved line and precise floral drawing with them, which is why a Nain looks like a cooler, paler cousin of an Isfahan. The La count describes how many plies make up the yarn used for each knot: the fewer the plies, the thinner the yarn and the finer the resulting weave. A 9La piece such as this one uses a firm, evenly spun yarn that holds the outline of a single flower petal without blurring, while keeping enough body underfoot to live in a real room rather than hang on a wall. Look at the reverse photograph and you can see the knot rows lying in tight, regular courses with no slack, the hallmark of an experienced workshop weaver rather than a village loom. Combined with the silk highlights and the cotton foundation, that structure is what gives this piece its weight, its flat lay and its long working life.
