8'10" x 11'11" Tribal Soltani Ziegler Rug | Multi Neutral Brown, Rust & Sage | Fine Ghazni Wool, Brand New

Laid out in horizontal bands rather than around a single medallion, this brand new Soltani is the kind of hand-knotted Oriental rug that reads as quiet from across the room and then rewards you up close. The 8'10" x 11'11" field is a soft mushroom brown that shifts in the light, broken by wide panels of rust, sage and ivory tribal drawing. It falls neatly into the 9x12 area rug footprint most open living spaces are built around, with a dense fine wool pile that has never been walked on. A certificate of authenticity ships with the rug.

Design and Motifs

The Soltani layout belongs to the banded khorjin family of tribal rugs, where the field is divided into stripes of unequal depth instead of a centered composition. Two wide panels carry elongated hexagonal medallions, each one filled with stepped stars, hooked arms and tiny latch hooks, and each one drawn in a different palette so no two repeat exactly. A third band runs a row of flattened octagonal guls with ivory zigzag spacers between them. The plain bands between the busy ones are scattered with 4 petal cross flowerheads and small dotted lines, which is what gives the rug its breathing room. Narrow ivory and red barber pole stripes separate every panel, and the ends finish in a simple flowerhead band rather than a formal border, so the pattern runs out to the edge the way village weaving does.

A Neutral Brown Ground With Rust and Sage Accents

The ground is the reason this piece works in so many rooms: a warm greige brown, somewhere between mushroom and light camel, with a gentle horizontal abrash that proves the wool was dyed in small lots. Against it the accent work is deliberately hot, led by madder rust and a deeper brick red in the medallion centers. Sage and olive green appear inside several of the guls and in the small crosses, cooled further by denim and slate blue, while apricot and old gold warm the hexagon outlines. Ivory does the structural work, outlining the medallions, filling the zigzag spacers and lighting up the guard stripes. A few motifs drop into chocolate brown and near black, which sharpens the whole field. Read at a distance the rug is neutral; read from 3 feet away it is genuinely multi colored.

Weaving Quality and Origin

This rug was hand-knotted in Pakistan, where the best workshops have spent 30 years refining the Ziegler and Soltani tradition into some of the most consistent hand-knotted work being produced anywhere today. The pile is handspun highland Ghazni wool, a long staple fleece with a natural lanolin content that takes dye deeply and holds a lustrous surface under traffic, knotted onto a cotton foundation for a flat, stable rug that lies down without fighting the floor. The knotting is even across all 143 inches of length, the selvedges are tightly overcast and the clipped pile shows the outlines cleanly, which is what separates a workshop piece from a commercial one. Perfect condition, never used, and heavy enough to hold a large room without a pad shifting under it.
