This is a brand new, never used Soltani rug measuring 8'1" x 11'1", hand-knotted in fine Ghazni wool on a cotton foundation. The field reads as a soft sage green with a warm taupe undertone, and the abrash, the gentle horizontal shift in tone that comes from hand-spun yarn and small dye lots, moves quietly across the whole surface rather than sitting in bands. Against that calm ground the weaver placed a full all over garden of palmettes, rosettes and lattice urns in rust, gold, turquoise, navy and ivory, so the rug stays neutral from across the room and turns colorful up close. Design and Motifs

The Soltani drawing is a true all over design with no central medallion, built on a slow, wide vine lattice that repeats up the length of the rug. Three motifs carry the field. Large crowned palmettes open like fans in red, green and turquoise, each one split down the center so the two halves carry different colors. Between them sit lattice urns, small vessels drawn with a diamond grid infill in ivory over teal or over olive, each topped by a single blossom. Filling the gaps are 8 petal rosettes, tulip forms and tiny curled leaves that hook off the vine in pale ivory and coral. The main border repeats a large boteh style cartouche with a red heart and a hooked gray outline, alternating with upright flowering sprays, and it is framed on both sides by narrow guard bands of running leaf and reciprocal arrowhead. The corners are resolved properly, with the border pattern turning the corner instead of being cut off, which is a small detail that separates a carefully drawn rug from a rushed one.

A Sage Green and Taupe Palette With Rust and Gold Accents

The ground color is the reason this rug works in almost any room. It is a muted sage green pulled toward taupe, closer to a natural greige than to a true green, and it changes slightly with the light and with the direction of the pile. The border is a shade lighter and warmer, almost a pale mushroom, which lifts the frame away from the field.
