8'10" x 11'8" Pakistani Transitional Rug | Wool | Pale Ivory and Pastels
A hand-knotted rug from Pakistan, 8'10" x 11'8", with a pile of natural wool and a rectangular format. The drawing is dense but the palette is not: an all-over floral field and a full set of borders, all of it worked a shade or two apart from the ivory ground, so from standing height the rug reads as a single pale surface and the pattern only resolves when you look down at it. At this size it covers a seating group with the front legs of the furniture on the wool.
The design
The field carries a transitional repeat of rosettes, small palmettes and serrated leaves strung on a thin vine that runs corner to corner rather than radiating from a centre. There is no medallion. A main border of linked rosettes and turning leaf forms runs the full perimeter, set between narrow guard stripes that are themselves drawn with a running vine, and in the close views a faint column of vertical stems shows along the inner edge of the border. The outlines are drawn in a slightly warmer tone than the ground, which is what gives the field its quiet texture in the overhead photograph.
The colour
The ground is between ivory and sand, warmer in the raking light of the corner shots and cooler across the centre, where a grey-green cast settles over the wool. Within it the motifs are picked out in wheat, pale apricot and a soft taupe-grey, with a celadon green that appears mostly as thin outlines and the odd leaf. The strongest note in the rug is the apricot, and it is still a pastel. Nothing in the palette competes with anything else in a room.
The making
Hand-knotted in natural wool on a cotton-coloured warp, with short ivory fringe at both ends and a pile deep enough to show a clear roll when the rug is turned back. The reverse is legible motif for motif, which is the usual test of a knotted rug against a printed or tufted one. The table records it as new and in perfect condition, and the photographs bear that out: no wear at the edges, no thinning in the field. It sits among the paler pieces in our stock.
