8'10" x 11'9" Indian Ziegler Rug | Berry Red & Gold All Over Floral | New Wool Pile, Never Used

This piece measures 8'10" x 11'9", it is brand new, and it has never spent a day on a floor. The field is a deep berry red carrying a full all over drawing in gold, ivory and pale blue, enclosed by a wide clear gold border and a near black outer band of linked palmettes. The pile is wool, clipped at a medium height that keeps the drawing crisp, and it sits on a cotton foundation with the ivory warp ends left as plain fringe at both ends. At just under 9 by 12 feet it covers a full seating group or a long dining table, which puts it squarely in the most useful of our 9x12 area rugs. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording size, material, weave and origin.

Design and Motifs

The field is a classic Ziegler all over floral design with no medallion, so the pattern repeats and mirrors evenly across the whole surface. Thin vine stems climb from a central axis and open into large round rosettes, lotus palmettes and long serrated acanthus leaves, with small cloudband scrolls in soft blue curling between them and tiny 4 petal flower heads filling the gaps. The repeat is mirrored left to right along the center line, which is why the close-up photographs show matched pairs of palmettes on either side of a single ivory stem. The border system runs 4 bands deep: a narrow ivory guard of evenly spaced rosettes in rust and black, then the wide gold main border drawn with black handled vases, cypress leaves and curved paisley forms, then a second ivory rosette guard, and finally the black navy outer border of alternating palmettes and flower heads. A thin berry red selvage edge closes the whole thing off.

Berry Red and Gold Color Reading

The ground is a berry red that leans raspberry in daylight and drops toward wine where the pile lies away from the light, a cooler and less orange red than the usual brick tones. Against it the drawing is worked in a graded palette: strong honey gold, pale wheat and cream in the palmette centers, camel and warm tan in the leaves, muted salmon and soft rose in the rosette hearts, and a chalky pale blue grey that outlines the cloudbands and lifts the whole field. Black and charcoal outlines hold the shapes without hardening them. The main border is a clean gold, flat and open rather than busy, which gives the eye somewhere to rest between the dense field and the almost black outer band. Slight abrash in the gold border and across the red shows the yarn was dyed in batches, a mark of honest hand work, and the fringe is natural ivory.

Made in India and Weaving Quality

This is an Oriental rug hand-knotted in India, and that is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made. Indian weaving houses took over the Ziegler style decades ago and have refined it to the point that the drawing is often cleaner than the pieces that inspired it. The back photographs show the proof: tight even rows, straight warps, no pulled or lazy lines, and a knot count dense enough to carry the fine vine stems and the small rosette guard borders without them blurring. The wool is good quality and already has a light sheen that will only improve with traffic, and the cotton foundation keeps a rug this size lying flat. Woven on an upright loom, knotted by hand, washed and clipped by hand, carrying the warehouse tag number 5582, and shipped new.
