8'11" x 12'4" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Black Field, Burgundy Arabesque Border | New, Never Used

This 8'11" x 12'4" Jaipur rug came off the loom and went straight into storage, so the pile still stands full and the fringe is clean and untouched. The drawing is taken from 19th century Agra and Mughal workshop weaving, redrawn here on a jet black ground with a dense scroll of camel gold leafwork, and it is carried in heavy hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation that shows tight, even knot rows on the reverse. At roughly 107 inches by 148 inches it falls squarely into the 9x12 Oriental rug class, which is the standard footprint for a sofa group or a 10 seat table. It ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion. Instead the field is an all over design of broad serrated acanthus leaves that curl back on themselves, each pair meeting at a palmette or a small 8 petal rosette, with the whole composition mirrored across both the long and short axis so that the 4 corners read identically. A single rust and gold rosette marks the center point where the leaf scrolls cross. The border system runs in 3 bands: a narrow gold guard stripe with a repeating curl of tiny buds, a wide burgundy main border carrying full palmettes and feathered leaves, and a second camel gold meander on the outside, closed by a solid black selvage edge and natural ivory fringe. The scale of the leafwork is large and confident, which is why the pattern still reads clearly from across a room rather than dissolving into busy texture.

A Black Ground With Burgundy, Gold and Teal

The field is a true deep black, not charcoal and not navy, and the wool takes enough light that the ground shifts between matte and faint sheen as you walk around it. Against that black the leafwork is worked in a range of camel and antique gold tones, from pale honey at the leaf tips to a darker caramel in the stems, with soft apricot and peach where the shading turns. The blossoms and rosettes are rust and terracotta with brick red centers. Running through every leaf is a vein of teal that cools to sage green at the edges, and those blue green flashes are what keep the gold from going flat. The main border is a dark burgundy, closer to wine than to tomato red, and it frames the black field with real contrast. If a dark ground is the deciding factor for your room, this sits with the best of our black rugs.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the main centers of fine hand-knotted weaving in India, and India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced. This piece shows why: the knot count is high enough to hold the curved line of an arabesque without jagging it, the wool is heavy and well spun with a natural luster, and the beat-down is consistent from end to end with no distortion in the border lines. It is honestly made in India, not a copy pretending otherwise, and it belongs in the broader family of Oriental rug traditions that borrow Mughal and Safavid drawing. Handled correctly, a wool pile at this density on a cotton foundation is a multi generation floor covering.
