9' x 12'2" Jaipur Rug | Black Field, Burgundy Border, All-Over Vine | New, Never Used
This 9' x 12'2" Jaipur rug is a hand-knotted wool piece from India, woven in the Jaipur workshop tradition with a jet black ground, a deep burgundy main border and a drawing style that breaks every leaf and stem into small tiles, so the whole surface reads like inlaid mosaic work. It is brand new and never used, with a clean 3/8" wool pile, a cotton foundation and straight, true edges on all 4 sides. As a fully hand-knotted Oriental rug, it ships with our certificate of authenticity, and at just over 12 feet long it sits squarely in the most useful of the 9x12 rug sizes for a full living room or a 10 seat dining table.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The close-up photographs were taken under warm indoor light, which pushes the black ground toward a deep green-black on screen. In daylight the field is a true black and the wide border reads as a dark wine burgundy, as shown in the overhead photograph.
Design and Motifs
The field carries an all-over design with no central medallion: heavy curling acanthus vines climb from the 2 ends, meet at footed urn forms on the vertical axis and enclose open rosettes, fanned palmettes and small 4 petal flower heads. What makes the drawing unusual is the outlining, where each scroll and leaf is built from tiny blocks of contrasting wool, so the pattern looks tessellated rather than shaded. The main burgundy border repeats the same vocabulary at a larger scale, with big rolling scrolls and split palmettes set in the 4 corners and on the long sides, framed inside and out by a narrow olive guard stripe of linked ivory and blue rosettes. A plain black outer band and ivory fringe close the ends, keeping the composition tightly contained.
Black Ground, Burgundy Border and the Palette Between
The ground is a saturated black that gives the rug its weight and lets every pale motif float forward. Against it the vine work runs through olive and sage green, soft gold, sand and ivory, with salmon and terracotta rosette centers, small slate blue leaves and points of clear red. The main border is a deep burgundy, closer to wine than to brick, and it carries the same olive, ivory and blue accents so the frame never feels separate from the field. The overall effect in a room is dark and quiet from a distance, then detailed and surprisingly warm up close, which makes it easy to build around: ivory walls, walnut furniture, brass and aged leather all sit well on it.
Jaipur Weaving and Quality
Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great hand-knotting centers of northern India, and India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced. This piece shows it: even knotting across the full 9 foot width, tight ivory fringe, a firmly overcast selvage in black and a 3/8" pile that has been sheared level so the small mosaic blocks stay crisp instead of blurring. The wool is dense and takes light well, with a low sheen visible in the angled photographs. Built on a cotton foundation and never walked on, it is ready for decades of daily use in a busy room.
