8'2" x 9'9" Agra Oriental Rug | Beige All-Over Floral with Olive Green Medallion | Brand New
This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Agra rug measuring 8'2" x 9'9", woven in wool on a cotton foundation in the classic traditional Agra idiom. The field is a soft beige, filled edge to edge with fine floral drawing, and the whole composition is pulled together by a single olive green medallion at the center. It is a quiet, formal Oriental rug rather than a loud one, which is exactly why it works in a furnished room, and the proportions place it squarely among 8x10 Oriental rugs that sit under a sofa and coffee table with the front legs of the side chairs on the wool. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity identifying the weave, materials and origin.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The overhead studio photograph reads cooler and paler, while the showroom floor photographs were taken under warm light and push the beige toward gold. The true ground color sits between the two, a warm soft beige. The faint tonal shading visible in one angled photograph is light catching the direction of the pile, not wear, fade or damage. The rug is new and unused, and it is professionally steamed and pressed before it ships.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all-over floral drawing: a continuous lattice of thin vines carrying lanceolate leaves, split palmettes, small 8 petal rosettes, and upright flowering sprays that mirror perfectly across both the long and short axes. At the center sits an 8 lobed cruciform medallion outlined in burgundy, its olive green ground filled with a star of radiating leaves and scattered blush flowerheads, with four small vase-and-blossom cartouches set at the lobes. The 4 corners carry stepped spandrels in the same olive tone, drawn with the same vocabulary as the medallion so the eye reads one design rather than separate pieces. The main border is wide and generous, alternating large shield palmettes with curling cloudband scrolls and five-lobed rosettes, and it is framed on both sides by narrow reciprocal guard stripes: a running rosette-and-vine stripe outside, a fine serrated ribbon stripe inside. Count the bands and there are 5 in all, an unusually complete framing for a rug this size.
A Beige Ground with Olive Green, Burgundy and Brown
The palette is deliberately narrow and tonal, which is what gives this piece its calm. The ground is a warm beige with a faint ivory bloom where the pile lies away from the light, the kind of neutral that reads differently morning and evening and sits comfortably among other beige and ivory rugs. Over that ground the drawing is carried in two browns, a soft camel for the vine work and a deeper coffee brown for leaf masses and outlines, with olive green doing the structural work in the medallion, the spandrels and the big border palmettes. Burgundy and a brighter brick red supply the outlines, the stripe accents and the small florets, concentrated in the guard bands where they frame the whole rug in a thin line of red. Scattered through the field are the softer notes that make the rug feel hand-dyed rather than printed: blush pink flowerheads, pale celadon leaves, a dusty rose in the border rosettes and occasional ivory highlights. There is no navy and no black, so nothing in the color scheme fights the furniture.
Agra Weaving and Quality
Agra, in northern India, has been a weaving center since the Mughal court workshops, and the city's modern ateliers inherited that taste for curvilinear floral drawing executed at a high knot count. India is where most of the world's genuinely good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug is a fair example of why: the back photograph shows tight, even, well-packed rows with no loose or skipped areas, the drawing holds its curves through the medallion lobes and the border scrolls without the stepped shoulders you see in coarser village work, and the wool has been clipped to a medium pile that shows the fine detail while still feeling substantial underfoot. The cotton warp and weft keep the rug flat and dimensionally stable, so it lies down properly without a pad fighting it. Handled, it feels like a workshop piece made to a standard rather than to a price, and at 8'2" x 9'9" it is a usable, hard-wearing floor rug that happens to be drawn with real care.
