8'3" x 12' Persian Kashan Rug | Red Field Floral Medallion | Ivory Spandrels, Perfect Condition

This is the classic central Persian formula done properly: a red field, a navy lobed medallion, ivory spandrels, and borders deep enough to frame the whole thing without crowding it. At 8'3" x 12' it is a true room-size piece, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, with a full even pile that still has the slight sheen good Kashan wool keeps for decades. The drawing is tight and symmetrical across both halves of the field, which is the first thing to check on a city rug of this scale, and the end finishes and cotton fringe are intact. One of the better examples among Persian Kashan rugs at this size, and like everything we import it ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

A lobed navy medallion sits dead center, built around an 8 petal rosette with ivory and light blue inner cusps, and it carries pendants top and bottom that pull the eye down the long axis of the rug. Around it the field is filled edge to edge with Shah Abbasi palmettes, split leaf arabesques, small rosettes and curling vine, drawn as a connected system rather than scattered sprays, so the ground never looks empty even though the field color stays fully visible. The 4 corners are resolved with ivory spandrels, each one filled with its own vinery and a cloudband style flourish, and the transition from ivory corner to navy border is clean and deliberate. The main border runs a repeating palmette and rosette cartouche on navy, flanked by paired guard stripes of ivory and light blue carrying small reciprocal buds, and a final narrow red outer stripe closes the rug. It is a formal, balanced layout that reads as traditional from across a room and rewards a closer look at the detail.

Color Palette: Raspberry Red, Navy and Ivory

The field is a warm raspberry leaning red, a shade lighter and rosier than a tomato red, and it photographs slightly pinker under showroom light than it looks on a floor at home. Against it the main border is a deep navy with an aubergine cast, dark enough to act almost as a neutral frame. The motifs are where the palette opens up: salmon and rose pinks, clear ivory and cream, a soft turquoise and a mid light blue, touches of saffron gold, olive and sage green in the guard stripes, and small brown and near black outlines that keep every flower legible. Green appears as an accent in the narrow bands rather than as a field color. For buyers working around mahogany, walnut or warm oak floors, or pairing with cream walls, it sits comfortably with other red Persian rugs while reading softer and more antique than a modern dyed red.

Kashan: The Weaving Town and the Quality

Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its workshops trace their drawing straight back to the Safavid court tradition. Two things built the reputation: local wool that is soft and lustrous, and a workshop discipline that keeps the curved line accurate over a long rug, which is exactly what you see here in the medallion cusps and the unbroken border repeat. Kashan is also the most recognizable Persian design in America, to the point that when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. This piece is town workshop weaving on a cotton foundation with a wool pile, dense enough to hold its shape under furniture and one of the most practical choices among large room-size Persian rugs for a long term floor.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
