8'5" x 11'2" Persian Tabriz Rug | Navy Blue All-Over Floral & Bird Design | Fine Wool Pile

This is a hand-knotted Persian Tabriz in a dark navy and burgundy palette, woven in wool on a cotton foundation and finished with a 3/8" pile that still stands firm across the whole surface. Design and Motifs

The field carries a balanced all-over design rather than a single central medallion. Along the vertical axis sit 3 concentric rosettes drawn in banded rings, and between them run large lobed cartouches, serrated leaf palmettes, cloudbands and stepped diamond forms. The most interesting element is the pair of long-tailed birds worked into the upper and lower thirds of the field, wings drawn in rust and copper against the dark ground, a pictorial touch that village-level Tabriz weaving rarely attempts. Small vase and urn forms, 8 petal blossoms and scrolling vine tendrils fill the remaining ground so there is almost no empty space. The main border repeats a rhythm of ivory rosettes and diamond cartouches on red, and it is bracketed by ivory and gold guard stripes with their own delicate vine, which gives the whole composition 4 crisply resolved corners.

The Navy Blue and Burgundy Palette

The ground is a deep navy that reads almost black in the overhead photograph and opens up to a true midnight blue in the close-ups, exactly the depth that makes navy blue Persian rugs so useful under dark furniture. Against it the main border is a saturated burgundy red, warm rather than orange, separated from the field by a pale ivory guard that keeps the two heavy colors from fighting. Inside the drawing the weaver used a surprisingly wide secondary range: sage and olive green in the large cartouches, coral and salmon in the palmettes and bird plumage, soft sky blue in the rosette centers, gold in the guard stripes, and clean ivory for outlines. Those lighter tones are what lift the pattern off a ground this dark, and they are placed sparingly enough that the rug still reads as navy and red from across a room.

Tabriz Weaving in Northwest Persia

Tabriz sits in the northwest corner of Persia and has been a weaving capital for centuries, with a workshop tradition that measures fineness in Raj, the count of knots per gereh of about 2.75 in across the width. What separates Tabriz work from the surrounding village production is discipline: the cartoon is followed exactly, curved lines stay curved, and repeating elements land in the same place on both sides of the field, all of which you can verify here by comparing the top and bottom thirds of the pattern. The wool is firm and slightly lustrous, the knotting is even, and the 3/8" pile has been kept low enough to hold the fine detail in the birds and the vine scrolls.
