8'6" x 11'7" Persian Tabriz Rug | Wool and Silk | Black and Ivory
This hand-knotted rug measures 8'6" x 11'7", a large rectangular piece with a wool and silk pile. Seen from above, it reads as a black rectangle of flowers framed by a broad band of cream. The field carries an all-over floral pattern with no medallion, and the border is wide enough to take up roughly a quarter of the width on each side.
Design
The Tabriz drawing here is a dense all-over floral, built on thin scrolling vines that run corner to corner and repeat in mirrored pairs rather than radiating from a centre. Palmettes, open roses, small serrated leaves and half-fan blossoms fill almost every inch of the black ground, with a faint cruciform emphasis at the middle where four larger rosettes group around a single flowerhead. The frame is a three-band arrangement: a wide cream main border of lotus palmettes and flower sprays linked by a pale scrolling line, set between two narrower sage guard bands of small flowerheads, with a thin black outer stripe and a plain ivory fringe at both ends. The corners are properly resolved, the border pattern turning cleanly rather than being cut off.
Colour
The field is a flat, dark black that shows the flowers in sharp relief. Against it the blossoms run through dusty rose and pink, deeper burgundy at the flower hearts, and a soft grey-green in the leaves and guard bands. The main border is ivory to light beige, warming towards sand where the silk catches the light, and scattered saffron and pale blue accents appear inside the larger palmettes. The overall effect is muted rather than bright: nothing in the palette competes with the black.
Making
The rug is hand-knotted in Persia, with a wool and silk pile. The silk is used selectively, in flower centres, outlines and parts of the border, where it sits slightly lower and brighter than the wool around it and shifts in tone as the light moves across the pile. The listing records the rug as pre-owned and professionally washed, with condition given as perfect; the pile stands evenly across the field and the fringes are intact at both ends.
