8'7" x 12' Oushak Oriental Rug | Blush, Tan and Neutral All Over Floral | New Wool Pile
This 8'7" x 12' piece is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in India in the Oushak tradition, with a wool pile on a cotton foundation. The scale works as a true room-size floor covering, close enough to the standard 9x12 Oriental rugs footprint to anchor a seating group or a long dining table without crowding the walls. The weave is even and supple, the handle is soft rather than stiff, and the ends finish in plain cotton fringe. Every rug we ship arrives with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is hand-knotted and describing the materials, origin and measurements recorded here.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The full overhead photograph reads slightly cooler and dustier than the detail shots, which were taken closer to the wool under warmer light. The true field sits between the two: a soft blush with a tan undertone. Nothing in these images shows wear, fading or damage, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a classic Oushak all over design with no central medallion, built from broad serrated leaves, split palmettes and long vine stems that repeat across the length in mirrored rows. Large arrow-shaped leaf forms reach out from either side of a slim vertical lattice, and between them sit small 8 petal rosettes, tulip buds and star flowers scattered at a size that keeps the surface from feeling empty. The drawing is deliberately angular, the way Oushak work has always been drawn, with straight stems and blunt corners instead of tight curves, which is what gives the pattern its relaxed, almost architectural rhythm. A single main border of linked rosettes and clover leaves runs on an ivory ground, framed by narrow guard stripes with the same muted floral repeat, so the border reads as a quiet frame rather than a competing band.
A Blush, Tan and Neutral Palette
The ground is a soft blush that sits closer to dusty rose in daylight and warms toward salmon under lamplight, with a faint tan undertone running through the wool that keeps the pink from reading sweet. Over it the drawing is worked in pale sage green, celadon, soft powder blue and a smoky slate grey-blue, with ivory outlines separating one motif from the next so the pattern stays legible at low contrast. Scattered through the field are warm caramel and rust-tan accents, concentrated in the larger leaf forms, which are the only genuinely saturated notes in the whole rug. The border is ivory to oatmeal, with its flowers picked out in the same sage, tan and blue family. Taken together it is a 6 color palette with almost no hard contrast, the kind of neutral that sits comfortably with white oak, linen upholstery, warm brass and both painted and stained furniture.
Hand-Knotted in India: Weave and Quality
India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this rug is a fair example of why. The back, visible in the folded corner photograph, shows clean, regular rows of knots on a cotton foundation, with the pattern coming through sharply on the reverse, which is the first thing to check on any handmade piece. The pile is wool, cut at a medium height and plied densely enough that the pinch test shows a firm, springy body rather than a thin one, so the rug will take traffic in a living room or dining room and recover from furniture compression. The wool itself has a soft, slightly matte luster, which is exactly what this washed, low contrast palette needs. Selvedges are overcast by hand in a blush yarn that matches the field, and the fringe is the natural extension of the cotton warp, not sewn on afterwards.
