Measuring 8'7" x 11'7", this hand-knotted Chobi from Peshawar is the quiet kind of Oriental rug that decorators keep coming back to: a full classical drawing, executed entirely in pale beige, sand and ivory, so the pattern reads as texture from across the room and only resolves into flowers when you stand over it. The pile is a low, dense 1/4" of wool on a cotton foundation, which is exactly what you want under furniture legs in a room this size. It is brand new and has never been on a floor. Design and Motifs

The field carries a classic all-over floral design with no central medallion: staggered rows of broad palmettes and rosettes linked by long curving vines and serrated leaves, the repeat offset so the eye keeps traveling instead of locking onto one point. Because the drawing is worked tone on tone, the motifs sit just a half shade away from the ground, which is what gives the rug its washed, quietly antique look. A wide main border of alternating palmettes and leafy scrollwork frames the field, held between narrow guard stripes of small linked flowerheads, and the corners are resolved cleanly rather than cut off mid-motif. The end borders in the close-up photographs show the same rosette and vine cadence carried right down to the ivory fringe.

A Study in Pale Neutral Beige

The whole rug lives inside a narrow neutral range. The ground is a pale sand beige that warms toward soft gold under direct light and cools toward light taupe indoors, with the palmettes drawn a touch lighter in cream and ivory and the vine work a shade deeper in greige and pale mushroom. The main border is marginally darker than the field, enough to give the rug an edge and stop it from floating, while the guard stripes and the outer selvage hold the lightest ivory in the piece. There is gentle abrash, the natural variation of hand-dyed wool, running across the width in soft horizontal bands, and it is the reason a neutral like this never looks flat or machine-made. Peshawar, in northwestern Pakistan, has become one of the most reliable sources of good contemporary hand-knotted work, and the Chobi group is its best known output: hand-spun wool, soft muted dyes, classical drawing, and a finishing wash that takes the brightness out of the yarn before the rug ever leaves the workshop. This one is evenly woven edge to edge, with straight sides, tight selvages and a firm handle that tells you the weft was beaten down properly rather than rushed.
