8'9" x 11'11" Persian Sheikh Safi Rug | All-Over Floral Medallion | 1980s Fine Wool

This 8'9" x 11'11" Persian rug carries the Sheikh Safi design, one of the most borrowed and least often well drawn patterns in Persian weaving. It was knotted in the 1980's with a 3/8" fine wool pile on a cotton foundation, and the drawing holds together across the whole field: a lobed navy medallion floating on deep red, then rank after rank of palmettes and flowering vine reaching out to a navy main border. The footprint puts it squarely with 9x12 Persian rugs, the size most living and dining rooms are built around. Condition is excellent, and the rug ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a wide navy medallion with a scalloped, almost cloud-band outline, filled with pale arabesque scrollwork and finished with a small rosette core in saffron, rose and turquoise. Above and below it sit two pendant cartouches, each one an ivory and navy shield with a flowering spray inside, and beneath the lower pendant a small footed vessel sends up a thin fan of stems, the quiet signal that this is a shrine-derived drawing rather than a generic floral. Around the medallion runs a true all-over floral design: large boteh and palmette cartouches in ivory, blue and gold repeat in staggered rows, linked by fine vine, rosettes, serrated leaves and curling half-palmettes. The main border repeats a navy ground with alternating rosette and palmette panels, framed by a salmon guard stripe and narrow reciprocal minor borders on all 4 sides. Nothing is left empty, yet the medallion still reads instantly from across a room.

A Deep Red Field with Navy, Ivory and Green

The field is a deep red that leans toward raspberry where the light catches the pile, a shade that comes from good wool taking dye evenly rather than from any wash. Against it the navy of the medallion and main border reads almost black in shadow and turns clear indigo in direct light. Ivory and cream do the heavy lifting inside the palmettes and cartouches, keeping the pattern legible, while a soft salmon inner border gives the eye a place to rest between the red field and the dark frame. Scattered through the vinework are mossy and sea greens in the leaves, small hits of gold and saffron in the rosette centers, pale rose and turquoise in the flower heads. It is a warm, saturated palette that sits well with dark wood, brass and cream plaster, and it hides everyday traffic the way a light rug never will.

Persian Weaving and the Sheikh Safi Tradition

The Sheikh Safi name comes from the Safavid-era floor coverings woven for the shrine of Sheikh Safi al-Din at Ardabil in the 16th century, the pieces that set the template for the medallion-and-vine layout copied by Persian workshops ever since. A weaver taking it on has to keep a curved line true across nearly 12 feet of length, and that only works when the knot count is high enough to draw an arc instead of a stair-step. Turn this one over and the back is tight and even, the pattern crisp from the reverse, the selvedges intact and the fringe original at both ends.
