8' x 10'1" Black Ziegler Oriental Rug | Ivory Floral Border | Chobi Peshawar Weave, Brand New
Dark grounds are hard to weave well, and this one is handled with real control. The field of this 8' x 10'1" hand-knotted rug reads as a true black, and every stem, leaf and blossom sitting on it is drawn in warm camel, soft ivory and muted sage so the pattern lifts cleanly off the ground instead of disappearing into it. It is a Ziegler design, all-over rather than medallion based, with a wide ivory main border of standing lily and palmette sprays and a 5/16" wool pile that still has its full factory loft. The rug is brand new and has never been on a floor, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it as a 100% hand-knotted piece. At 8 feet by just over 10 feet it covers the classic footprint of 8x10 Oriental rugs, the size most seating groups and six-seat dining tables are built around.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a continuous vine scroll with no central medallion, repeating in mirrored pairs along the long axis. Large serrated palmettes open to the left and right in each repeat, flanked by 8 petal rosettes with small red centers, spade shaped acanthus leaves and tight buds on hooked stems. Between them sit split leaf arabesques and feathery sprays that fan upward in a candelabra shape, a drawing habit borrowed straight from 19th century Ziegler workshop patterns. Four narrow guard stripes run inside and outside the main border, each filled with a running meander of tiny four petal flowers and paired leaves. The main border itself is the best piece of drawing on the rug: upright lily and carnation bouquets alternating with scrolling leaf cartouches, spaced evenly enough that the corners resolve without the pattern being cut off mid motif. All 4 corners are resolved, which on an all-over field is a sign the weavers were working from a properly scaled drawing rather than improvising.
Black Ground, Ivory Border and the Warm Tones Between
The ground is a deep saturated black with no blue or brown cast, and it photographs as solid even where the pile catches light at an angle. Against it, the floral work runs through a graded range of warm neutrals: honey camel on the large palmettes, a paler wheat gold on the leaves, and bright undyed ivory on the small sprays and inner flower petals, so there are at least 3 distinct values of tan working at once. Accent colors are used sparingly and deliberately, with brick rust at the rosette centers and in small border blossoms, and a dusty sage green on leaf tips and in one guard stripe. The main border shifts to a creamy oyster ivory, with the outermost band a slightly deeper camel that gives the rug a soft edge rather than a hard stop, and the selvage is finished in black with natural ivory cotton fringe at both ends. The overall effect belongs with the black and ivory rugs buyers look for when walls are pale and the floor needs to be the anchor.
Woven in Pakistan in the Peshawar Ziegler Tradition
This rug was made in Pakistan, where the Peshawar workshops have spent decades rebuilding the Ziegler repertoire, the softened all-over floral patterns originally commissioned for Western drawing rooms in the late 1800s. Chobi Peshawar weaving is now one of the most reliable sources of good hand-knotted work at this scale: cotton warp and weft, dense wool pile, a single weft shot kept tight so the back reads as even rows, and finishing done by hand at the selvages. The reverse shown against the ruler gives you the honest picture, with clear knot rows, a flat supple handle and no stiffness. If you are weighing how this kind of piece compares with court town weaving, our guide on the difference between Persian and Oriental rug production lays out what separates the groups. What you have here is a brand new, never used wool rug with full pile depth and a pattern that will look the same in 20 years as it does today.
