8' x 10'4" Ivory Oriental Rug | French Country Floral Trellis | Signed Fine Weave, Never Used
This is a European salon design executed on an Eastern loom, and the combination is what makes it unusual. The field is a cream ivory ground carrying a soft diamond lattice of leafy garlands and rose bouquets, framed by a wide scrolling border that reads more like 18th century French weaving than a traditional village pattern. It is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation at a finer than usual weave, roughly 200 knots per square inch, which is why the flower heads and ribbon work hold their shape instead of blurring. The weaver finished the piece with a small woven cartouche in the inner border, the mark of a workshop that signs its better work. The rug is brand new and never used, the pile is full, the ends are tightly finished with clean ivory fringe, and it sits comfortably in the standard 8x10 rug footprint under a dining table or a seating group. Every rug we ship travels with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The field is an all over floral design with no medallion. Long curling leaves and flowering stems cross each other to build a diamond lattice, and at each crossing sits a tied bouquet: full cabbage roses, tulips, small 5 petal blossoms and trailing buds, several of them gathered with a woven ribbon bow that you can see clearly in the close-up photographs. The drawing stays loose and naturalistic rather than stylized, so the field looks planted rather than patterned. Three borders frame it. The main border runs a continuous ribbon scroll with acanthus leaves and rosettes on the same ivory ground, which is why the rug reads light edge to edge instead of being boxed in by a dark frame. Inside and outside that band sit narrow guard stripes, one of them a row of small lotus palmettes on a deep green ground, the other a fine pearl and cartouche chain that carries the signature panel. The 4 corners resolve the scroll neatly, a detail that cheap copies of this pattern usually get wrong.
Color: Cream Ivory with Sage Green, Slate and Rose
The ground is a warm cream ivory, closer to unbleached linen than to white, and it carries a light wool sheen that shifts with the light across the length of the rug. The foliage is where the palette gets interesting: sage green and olive for the deeper leaves, a cool slate blue-grey for the leaves that turn away from the viewer, and soft taupe and sand for the ones that catch the light, so a single garland can hold 4 tones. Dark forest green, almost black in the photographs, is used sparingly as an outline to give the leaves their edge and to fill the narrow lotus stripe. The flowers supply the only strong color, and it is handled with restraint: raspberry and rose red at the center of the larger blooms, fading out through salmon, blush pink and a pale buttery yellow at the petal tips. Nothing is loud. The overall effect is a pale, dusty, slightly faded-looking palette that suits ivory walls, oak and walnut floors and antique furniture, and it is forgiving in rooms where a red or navy field would dominate.
Origin and Weaving Quality: Hand-Knotted in Pakistan
This rug was hand-knotted in Pakistan, where the workshops around Lahore have spent decades weaving classical and European floral patterns for the American and European trade, and where the best of them still work on the same vertical looms, cotton warp and hand-dyed wool that the tradition demands. It qualifies as an Oriental rug by origin and method, and like other fine hand-knotted Oriental rugs its quality is measured at the knot. At approximately 200 knots per square inch this is a finer weave than the standard commercial grade, roughly double the density of an ordinary floor rug, and the reverse shown with the ruler in the photographs makes the point: small, even, tightly packed knots in straight rows, with no gaps and no pulled selvedge. That density is what allows the thin ribbon work, the outlined leaf edges and the tiny signature script to be drawn at all. The pile is clipped low and uniform, which keeps the detail legible and gives the rug the firm, flat handle of a piece built to be walked on for a generation.
