This is a brand new Agra piece drawn from an antique cartoon, hand-knotted in fine wool on a cotton foundation and finished with a low, tightly clipped pile that keeps the drawing crisp. It has never been on a floor. The wool takes light the way good Indian wool does, shifting from soft beige gold to warm apricot as you walk around it, and the weave is a finer grade than standard village production, which is what lets the small black outlines and the thin scrolling vines stay legible at this scale. As an Oriental rug in the classic 8' x 10'2" room size, it covers a seating group or a full dining table without crowding the walls. Design and Motifs

The field carries a classical all over floral lattice built from broad scrolling vines that swing into large ogival compartments. Inside them sit fan palmettes, split leaves and lobed rosettes, with 8 petal flowers and small paired buds filling the gaps. There is no central medallion; instead the repeat is anchored by a column of dark outlined rosettes down the middle axis and by heavier brown palmettes set at intervals across the field, so the eye keeps moving rather than stopping in one spot. The drawing is deliberately soft, with the vine work shaded only a tone or two away from the ground, while the fine black outlining picks out the flower heads and leaf tips for contrast. The main border runs a procession of ivory star flowers alternating with dark serrated leaves and small rust blossoms, framed on both sides by narrow guard stripes of running vine and dot. The corners resolve cleanly, a good sign of a weaver following a properly balanced cartoon.

A Warm Beige, Gold and Rust Palette

The ground is a warm beige gold that leans toward apricot and light camel where the pile catches the light, and toward pale sand in the open areas near the ends. Over it the vine scroll is worked in a slightly deeper gold and soft olive, the palmettes in cinnamon, copper and a chocolate brown, so the field stays tonal instead of busy. The main border steps up to a clear rust terracotta, the strongest color on the rug, and the ivory star flowers inside it give the frame its sparkle. Black is used sparingly and to real effect: thin outlines around the rosettes, a few leaf tips, and the dark rosette centers that punctuate the middle of the field. Gentle abrash across the ground, the natural variation you get from small hand-dyed wool lots, keeps the large expanse of beige alive. The ivory cotton fringe at both ends and the muted overall key make this an easy rug to live with in rooms built on cream, camel, walnut and soft green.
