8' x 10'9" Ziegler Chobi Rug | Neutral Sand & Soft Blue All-Over Rosette Panels | Low Pile Wool, 2000s
This 8' x 10'9" Ziegler Chobi rug is built on restraint. The field is one long sweep of sand and oatmeal wool, and the drawing sits only a shade or two away from the ground color, so the piece reads as texture first and pattern second. It was hand-knotted in Pakistan in the 2000s with a close 1/4 inch pile that still carries the uneven luster of hand-spun yarn, which is exactly what you want in a neutral Oriental rug meant to sit under furniture and art rather than compete with them. It ships from our Freeport showroom with a certificate of authenticity recording size, material, weave and origin.
Please Note About the Photographs:
On a pale rug like this one the camera exaggerates light. The first image was shot warmer and more golden at the top and cooler toward the bottom, and the long floor shots show faint soft lines where the rug sat rolled and stacked in storage. Those lines are not wear, not fading and not damage, and they relax once the rug is laid flat. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all-over design with no central medallion: rounded 8 petal rosettes, drawn almost like small snowflakes, repeat in staggered rows across the whole 8' x 10'9" surface, and the spaces between them are filled with tiny stars, hooked crosses, paired buds and single sprigs that look hand-placed rather than stamped. The border system is layered and architectural, which is where this design earns the Khotan and Samarkand comparisons it often draws: a main band of square panels, each holding its own small rosette or hooked lozenge, framed by narrow guard stripes of running zigzag and bud chains. The corners resolve squarely rather than with curved spandrels, and the panels continue cleanly around all 4 sides. Because every motif is scaled small and drawn in low contrast, the pattern organizes the floor without ever reading as busy.
A Neutral Palette of Sand, Oatmeal and Soft Blue
The ground is not one flat beige. It moves from a warm honeyed camel at one end through oatmeal to a paler ivory sand at the other, the natural abrash of hand-spun wool taking dye in slightly different lots, and in raking light the field shows faint horizontal banding that gives the surface depth. Against that, every motif is worked in a soft celadon blue-grey: a little greener in the border panels, closer to pale slate in the field rosettes, and almost silver where the pile catches the light. Look closely at the macro photographs and you also find scattered flecks of faded terracotta and warm brown in the wool itself, the kind of small color interruption that only comes from hand-spun yarn. The back shows the same blues a shade cleaner and cooler than the face. It is a palette for rooms already working in cream, linen, pale oak, stone and soft blue, where a red or navy rug would take over.
Woven in Pakistan in the Ziegler Chobi Tradition
Pakistan's weaving workshops are where most of the world's best decorative hand-knotted work in this idiom is made today, and the Ziegler Chobi type is their signature: hand-spun wool, plant-based dye recipes, and a washed finish that takes the new edge off the color so the rug arrives looking settled. Chobi means wood, a reference to that mellow, bark and earth toned dye palette. The back of this piece, visible in the folded corner photograph, shows an even, well-tensioned weave with no pull or distortion, and the pile has been shorn down to about 1/4 inch so the small motifs stay crisp and the rug lies flat under a sofa, a bed or a dining table. At 8 feet by 10 feet 9 inches it slots neatly into the 8x11 rug footprint, with the condition graded Very Good and the pile even from end to end.
