This is a big, calm, decorator-grade piece: 11'7" x 16'5" of hand-knotted wool in soft light blue, wheat gold and ivory, woven in the Ziegler Chobi manner in Pakistan and never put on a floor. Laid out in our Freeport showroom it covers a full great room without crowding it, and the drawing is deliberately quiet, large circular rosettes floating over a washed blue ground rather than a single dominant medallion. The pile is wool on a cotton foundation, the handle is supple rather than stiff, and the palette is the kind that works under both antique furniture and a modern sectional. Design and Motifs

The field is an all over rosette design, built on staggered rows of large circular roundels, each one drawn as a ringed disc with a small ribbed rosette at its center. Between them sit 8 and 12 petal star flowers and smaller blossoms, all joined by a thin scrolling vine that runs corner to corner so the eye never stops on a single point. The main border is ivory and reads like a garden panel: alternating upright blue lancet leaves, small flowering shrubs and gridded panels of tiny 4 petal blossoms, repeated the full length of all 4 sides. Flanking it are narrow grey-taupe vine minor borders and ivory guard stripes with a running wave and rosette motif, and the whole rug is finished with a plain light blue outer band that frames the design cleanly. The repeat is large in scale, which is exactly right at this size; a finer, busier pattern would disappear in a 16 foot room.

The Light Blue, Gold and Ivory Palette

The ground is a soft mid light blue with visible tonal movement across the width, lighter in some passages and deeper toward the ends, the natural abrash of a hand-dyed wool field. Against it the roundels are worked in wheat gold, butter yellow, warm camel and cream, with several drawn in a muted warm grey that keeps the gold from turning sweet. A few rosettes carry a faint peach or blush cast where the dye softened, visible in the close detail shots. The main border is a low-sheen ivory that reads almost oatmeal in daylight, its leaf forms picked out in clear blue and olive, its small blossoms in grey, gold and brown. Nothing here is saturated: this is a muted, faded-antique palette of blue, gold, beige and soft brown that sits beautifully with walls in white, greige or pale blue, and with oak, walnut and brass. Ziegler Chobi Weaving from Pakistan

Ziegler is the name of a 19th century design tradition, spacious floral repeats drawn for Western rooms, and the weaving workshops around Peshawar in Pakistan have carried that tradition forward better than anyone for the last few decades. Chobi takes its name from the word for wood, a reference to the plant and wood based dye tradition that gives this group its characteristically soft, sun-faded tones. This piece is hand-knotted knot by knot on a cotton foundation with a full wool pile, at a medium village-scale knot count that suits the bold drawing, and the back shown in the final photograph is even and regular with straight, squared ends. As a hand-knotted Oriental rug rather than a machine-made reproduction, it will wear in rather than wear out, and at 11'7" x 16'5" it is a once-in-a-room purchase.
