This is a brand new, never used Ziegler Chobi, hand-knotted in Pakistan on a cotton foundation with hand-spun, vegetable dyed wool. It is a true Oriental rug in the workshop sense of the term: drawn from a cartoon, knotted by hand row by row, then washed and clipped to bring the wool to a low, even, slightly lustrous pile. At 9'1" x 12'1" it sits squarely in the most useful 9x12 area rug footprint, large enough to carry a full seating group with all four legs on the wool. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is hand-knotted and describing the materials, size and origin.

Design and Motifs

The field is an all over floral composition built around 4 large circular rosette medallions set in the corners of the field, with a spine of 3 concentric radiating discs running up the center. Between them the weaver filled every inch: 8 petal rosettes, palmettes, tulips and small blossoms on thin scrolling vines, paired ivory arabesques that read almost like heart-shaped cloudbands along the sides, and rows of tiny diamond flowerheads that give the ground a quiet rhythm. The border is unusual and worth a close look. Instead of one heavy band it uses a shallow panel of brick-like cartouches and stacked blossom columns, framed by narrow guard stripes of repeating buds, so the eye stays on the field rather than being boxed in. The drawing is symmetrical on both axes, which is what makes the rug read as calm despite the density of detail.

A Deep Teal Ground with Red, Gold and Ivory Accents

Teal is the anchor, a deep blue-green that shifts across the surface with the gentle abrash of hand-spun, plant dyed yarn, going smoky and almost slate in the open field and cooler, more oceanic where the light catches the pile at an angle. Against that ground the accent palette is soft rather than loud: tomato and brick red in the rosette centers and the small buds, saffron and antique gold in the vinework, warm ivory and oatmeal beige in the arabesques and border panels, with hints of pale sky blue, dusty rose, mushroom brown and celadon scattered through the blossoms. The close-up photographs show how many separate shades are in play, but from standing height they blend into a single muted, jewel-toned surface that works with charcoal, camel, cream and walnut furnishings.

Ziegler Weaving and Quality

The Ziegler style takes its name from the 19th century European importers who commissioned large-scale floral designs for Western rooms, and today Pakistan's hand-knotting workshops are where that tradition is kept alive at the highest standard. The wool here is hand-spun rather than machine spun, so the yarn takes natural dye unevenly and gives the finished rug its depth of color. The back, visible in the fold photographs, shows tight, regular knot rows and a clearly legible pattern, the mark of a careful weaver and a properly tensioned loom. The pile is clipped low, which suits a room with chairs that move, and the selvages and fringe are clean and intact on a rug that has never been laid in a home.
