3'1" x 19'6" Oriental Runner Rug | Ziegler Chobi All-Over Floral Design | Brand New
Runners this long are not easy to find, and almost never in a width that still looks generous underfoot. This one measures 3'1" x 19'6", a full 234 inches of hand-knotted wool with a burned red field, an ivory main border and an all-over floral vine that repeats cleanly from one end to the other. It is brand new and never used, with a dense 3/8" natural wool pile on a cotton foundation, and it arrives with a certificate of authenticity. Narrow and extremely long, it was effectively drawn for a long hallway runner situation, a gallery corridor or a stair landing run, and it belongs among the genuinely hard-to-source extra long runner rugs rather than the stock 8 and 10 foot lengths. As a hand-knotted Oriental rug, every knot was tied by hand, and the slight breathing in the red field is the signature of hand-spun yarn rather than any flaw.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is classic Ziegler: no medallion, no busy filler, just a slow, open floral lattice built from a thin cream vine that loops into large ovals down the length of the field. Inside each loop sits an 8 petal rosette, and between them alternate serrated palmettes and curled split leaves that read almost like small birds at a glance. The repeat is scaled large for a 3'1" width, so the pattern never crowds and the field stays visible, which is what makes a long runner feel calm instead of frantic. A narrow ivory main border carries a meandering ribbon vine punctuated with small rust red leaf tips and pale buds, framed on both sides by fine guard stripes and finished with a clean red outer edge. Both ends close with a symmetrical palmette and ribbon motif in the border panel, and the ivory cotton fringe is full and straight on both ends.
Burned Red and Ivory: the Color Story
The field is a burned red, a deep madder tone that shifts between true crimson and a darker brick where the light falls across the pile, with soft horizontal abrash moving down the 19'6" length. Against it, the flowers and palmettes are worked in buttery ivory and warm cream, with a few heads carrying a pale gold center, so the pattern glows rather than shouts. The leaves bring the quiet surprise: several are shaded in soft sage and celadon green, with others picked out in a cool grey-blue and a sandy tan, which keeps the whole thing from reading as a flat two color rug. The main border is a creamy oatmeal ivory, slightly warmer than the field motifs, and its scrolling vine is drawn in rust red and smoky grey-green. If your scheme leans toward red and burgundy rugs, this is the warm, lived-in version of that palette rather than a hard primary red.
Woven in Pakistan: the Chobi Ziegler Tradition
Chobi Ziegler weaving centers on the Peshawar region, where workshops revived the open, large-scale floral drawing that the Ziegler company commissioned for the Western market in the late 19th century. The method is deliberately old-fashioned: hand-spun wool rather than machine yarn, soft plant-based dye tones, and a wash that mellows the palette so a new rug reads with age from the first day. The weave here is even and tight for a village-style floral, the 3/8" pile is plush but low enough that a door will clear it, and the selvages and ends are solidly finished, which matters on a 234 inch runner that will take daily foot traffic along its whole length. The wool has that dry, lanolin-rich handle that polishes rather than mats, and the condition is perfect, with full pile and no wear anywhere on the rug.
