8' x 10' Chinese Tabriz Design Rug | Emerald Green Wool and Silk Medallion | Brand New

This is a hand-knotted 8' x 10' room size piece woven in China to the classical Tabriz medallion drawing, with a deep emerald green field, a burgundy and ivory star medallion, and silk worked into the flowers so the highlights lift off the wool as you walk around it. It has never been on a floor: the pile stands full and even edge to edge, the cream fringe is untouched, and the colors are exactly as the weaver set them. Anyone comparing this against a Persian piece should read our guide on what actually separates a Persian from an Oriental rug, because the distinction is origin, not quality of drawing. Every rug we sell, this one included, ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted, along with the material and origin on record.

Design and Motifs

The layout is the textbook medallion and corner format. At the center sits a pearl ivory 8 point star filled with tiny rose heads, ringed first by a wine red band of gold and cream cartouches, then by a wider burgundy halo of lobed palmettes, each one carrying a small green or cream leaf panel with a single flower inside. From that halo the field opens into a continuous all over vine scroll: curling split leaves, peonies, carnations and rosettes drawn on thin pink and celadon stems that never quite repeat. The 4 corner spandrels break to soft tan and pale blue, a deliberate tonal shift that makes the green field read larger than it is. Surrounding all of it are 5 bands of border, a broad burgundy main band of flower sprays and gold serrated leaves flanked by narrow salmon and ivory guard stripes with meandering rosettes. The drawing is curvilinear throughout, with no straight lines anywhere in the composition.

The Emerald Green and Burgundy Palette

The field is a genuine emerald, cool and saturated, deep enough to read almost forest green in low light and to show a distinct blue cast where the pile lies one way and a warmer bottle green where it lies the other. Against it the medallion halo and the main border run a true burgundy, closer to wine than to brick, with a plum shadow in the medallion's inner ring. The center star is ivory going to pale pearl grey. Scattered through the vines are rose and salmon blossoms, buttery gold and tan palmettes, cream flower heads, small pale blue and celadon florets, and dark navy outlining that pulls every flower away from the ground. The silk carries the lightest of those tones, so the pinks and creams flash while the green stays matte. If a saturated field is what you are after, our green rugs collection is the place to compare tones side by side.

Woven in China in the Tabriz Tradition

The Tabriz medallion is the most copied classical drawing in the rug world, and the Chinese workshops that took it on built their reputation on exactly this kind of piece: a cotton foundation, a fine even knot, closely clipped pile so the outlines stay sharp, and silk threaded into the highlight areas. The proof is in the detail shots, where the navy outline around each leaf holds its curve without stepping, which only happens when the knot count is high enough to carry a curved line. The weave is tight and flat on the back, the sides are firm, and the pile has the slight sheen of wool spun for luster rather than bulk. At 8' x 10' it is the standard American room size, and you can see how it sits against other 8 x 10 rugs in the same format before deciding.
