9' x 12' Wool and Silk Tabriz Design Rug | Ivory & Sage Green Floral Medallion | Brand New
Measuring 9' x 12', this brand new hand-knotted rug sets a soft sage green medallion and four matching corner spandrels against a wide ivory field, worked in fine wool with silk highlights that catch the light as you cross the room. The drawing follows the Tabriz medallion cartoon, one of the most demanding curvilinear layouts a weaver can attempt at this scale, and the curves here stay clean from the medallion cusps all the way out to the guard stripes. The pile is clipped low and evenly, the handle is firm rather than floppy, and the rug has never been laid on a floor. Among 9x12 area rugs this is the format that anchors a full sofa and chair group or a 6 to 8 seat dining table without crowding the walls, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a lobed sage green medallion with a salmon inner cartouche, filled with 8 petal rosettes, star lilies and small bud sprays, and closed top and bottom with a slim pendant finial. Around it the ivory field runs a curvilinear vine that carries paired palmettes, garden roses, carnations and serrated olive green leaves, each cluster mirrored across both axes so the layout reads balanced from any seat. The 4 corner spandrels repeat the medallion green and are filled with large scrolling gold arabesques, the kind of heavy acanthus curl that only holds its shape at a high knot count. Five bands frame the field: a camel guard stripe of alternating rosettes, a narrow sage green stripe of small blossoms, a broad ivory main border with rose and cream flower heads on a meandering stem, then the same pair of minor stripes reversed on the outside. Small cartouche panels sit at the corner joints of the inner frame, and the ends finish in a plain woven kilim and long ivory fringe.
A Quiet Ivory and Sage Green Palette
This is a pale rug, and the whole palette sits in a narrow, deliberately restrained range. The field is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than to white, and it makes up the majority of the surface. The medallion, spandrels and minor stripes are a dusty sage green with a celadon cast that reads grey in low light and greener under a lamp. The frames and the arabesque scrollwork move into camel and taupe, which keeps the borders from competing with the field. Inside the flower heads the weaver worked in salmon and dusty rose, butter yellow, pale lavender, a chalky powder blue and deep olive for the leaf shading, with fine dark brown outlining that keeps each motif legible against the cream ground. The silk is used as highlight rather than as whole motifs, so the sheen shows up on individual petals and on the vine lines and shifts when you view the rug from the other end. Nothing here is loud, which is what makes it easy to place in a room that already has pattern.
Made in China: Workshop Weaving and Quality
This piece was knotted in a Chinese workshop, and we state that plainly, because the honest answer matters more than a flattering one. Workshops in China have been producing fine hand-knotted work to a Tabriz cartoon for decades, and at their best they compete on exactly the things that make this design work: a tight, even knot count, disciplined tension across a 9 foot width, and shearing low enough that the drawing stays crisp. You can see it in the detail photos, where the flower heads carry 4 and 5 shades each without the outlines blurring. This is a hand-knotted Oriental rug on a cotton foundation with a wool and silk pile, not a machine-made reproduction and not a tufted piece, and the reverse in the last photograph shows the individual knots and the clean, readable pattern from the back that only genuine hand knotting gives you.
