Green is the hardest field colour to get right in a hand-knotted rug, and this one is right: a deep forest tone that holds its depth from across a room and warms up under lamplight. The weaver worked the classic Tabriz drawing, a lobed ivory medallion with matching pendants and corner spandrels, over a field of scrolling vines, and used silk for the flower heads and the finest outlines so the pattern lifts off the wool ground. This is a new weaving, never laid in a home, with full pile from edge to edge and clean cotton fringe at both ends. It is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, knot by knot on a cotton foundation, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity.

Design and Motifs

The centre is an 8 lobed medallion built in layers: a teal green rosette core, a soft blue inner field carrying 4 burgundy cartouches, then a cream halo of palmettes drawn with a fine red outline. Slim pendants run north and south, and the same cream and blue vocabulary repeats in the 4 corner spandrels so the layout closes properly at every corner. Between medallion and border the field is fully covered with curved vine work, lotus palmettes, carnations, rosettes and small leaf sprays, each blossom shaded across 4 or 5 tones rather than filled flat. The border system is 3 bands wide: a broad cream main border of alternating turquoise palmettes and flowering stems, framed by blush pink guard stripes and a narrow green minor band with tiny pink blossoms. The curved line is held cleanly through every turn, which is the test of a Tabriz drawing at this scale.

A Forest Green Field with Blush Pink and Cream

The palette is unusual and it is the reason this piece sells itself in person. The field is a dark forest green, almost bottle green in shadow, and the silk-worked flowers scattered over it come through in blush pink, rose, deep burgundy, powder blue, ivory and a warm camel gold. The cream main border gives the eye a place to rest, and the blush pink guard stripes pull the pinks of the field outward so the whole rug reads as one colour story instead of a field plus a frame. Soft blue appears three times, in the medallion interior, in the spandrels and in the border palmettes, which is what ties the composition together. Against pale oak, grey stone or a warm white wall the green goes rich rather than dark, and the pink keeps it from feeling heavy. Among green rugs this colourway is genuinely uncommon at this size.

Weaving Quality and Origin

This rug was made in China, in the workshop tradition that took up the Tabriz medallion drawing and wove it at a high knot count on a cotton foundation. Honesty about origin matters more than romance: what you are buying here is the weave itself, and the weave is fine. The knotting is tight enough to carry curved vine outlines a single line wide, the silk is used where it earns its keep, in petals, outlines and the medallion core, and the pile is even and dense underfoot with no loose or bumpy areas. The selvedges are overcast in matching green, the ends are secured and the fringe is original warp, not applied. At 9'4" x 13' it covers a full seating group or a 10 seat dining table with chairs pulled clear, which puts it squarely among our large area rugs, and it sits in the same conversation as far more expensive hand-knotted Oriental rugs while costing considerably less.
