9'4" x 12' Oriental Rug | Ferahan Vase and Tree Design | Wool and Silk Pile, Brand New

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in wool with silk highlights over a cotton foundation, drawn in the classic Ferahan manner with a quiet beige field carrying flowering trees, vases and scrolling vine from selvedge to selvedge. The drawing is unusually fine for a room-size piece: the flowers are small, the stems are thin and the whole field reads as a single continuous garden rather than a repeated block. At 9'4" x 12' it sits squarely in the most useful of all 9 x 12 area rugs, large enough to carry a full seating group with every leg on the wool. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted piece.

Design and Motifs

The field is an allover Ferahan-style composition laid out in mirrored halves. Two large cartouche-shaped panels anchor the center line, each enclosing a formal arrangement of flowering branches with a weeping willow silhouette rising through the middle. Around them sit low vases, small flowering shrubs, cypress-like sprays and rows of grasses, all tied together by thin burgundy stems that curl and cross without ever repeating in an obvious way. Rosettes, 8 petal blossoms, tulip buds and serrated leaves fill the open beige ground, and the four corners each carry a matching urn motif. The main border is wide and softly drawn, with big palmettes and curving leaf forms trading places along a taupe ground, framed on both sides by ivory guard stripes of small connected flower heads and a narrow outer stripe of rosettes. Nothing in the layout is crowded, which is what keeps a busy allover pattern calm across a 12 foot length.

A Beige Field With Olive, Gray and Rust

The ground is a warm beige, close to ivory in the flat overhead view and a shade deeper where the pile leans away from the light. Against it the flowers are worked in olive and sage green, soft camel gold, dusty rose and clay rust, with burgundy reserved for the thin stems and the centers of the larger blossoms. The main border shifts to a gray-taupe that pulls the whole palette down a half tone and keeps the beige field reading as the brightest surface in the room, while the guard stripes come back to a light ivory with gold and brown flower heads. Very small touches of teal blue and deep plum appear inside individual blossoms, visible up close and invisible from standing height. Where silk is used in the leaves and petals it catches light at a different angle than the wool, so the rug looks lighter from one end of the room and warmer from the other.

Woven in India to Workshop Standards

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this piece is a clear example of why. The back shows a tight, even knot grid with crisp outlines on every curve, which is the practical test of a good weave: a fine curved leaf or a thin vine only survives translation into knots when the density is there to support it. The foundation is cotton, which holds a large 9'4" x 12' rug straight and flat, and the pile combines wool for durability with silk in selected motifs for sheen. The handle is supple rather than stiff, the selvedges are tight and the fringe is clean and full. This is new production, unused, with full pile and no wear anywhere on the surface.
