Hold this rug at two different angles and it reads as two different colors. That is what a raised silk pile does: the fibers catch light along their length, so the old gold field turns bright honey from one end and deep olive bronze from the other, and the ivory vine work seems to lift off the ground. It measures 6' x 9', it has never been on a floor, and the drawing is the full classical vocabulary of a Tabriz pattern, a round concentric medallion on an oval field ring framed by coral corner pieces and a wide ivory palmette border. Design and Motifs

The center is a perfect circle built from roughly 8 concentric rings, working outward from a small pale blue rosette core through a band of miniature blossoms, a ring of coral hearts, a toothed ring of tiny leaves, and a final scalloped outline. Above and below it sit 2 ivory quatrefoil cartouches with gold centers, each anchored to a small brown palmette, and those 4 anchor points establish the vertical axis of the field. Around them the gold ground is filled edge to edge with a fine ivory vine that curls into split leaves, rosettes, tulip heads and long curved cloud bands, drawn thin enough that the field never looks crowded. The field is closed by an oval ring of pale blue meander that separates it from the 4 coral corner spandrels, each of which carries its own lattice of small blossoms. The main ivory border runs a repeating palmette and connecting vine, flanked inside and out by narrow guard stripes of navy and gold meander, the kind of layered framing that keeps a medallion pattern from looking loose. The Gold, Cream and Ivory Palette

The dominant color is an old gold, closer to antique brass than to yellow, with a green undertone that comes forward in raking light and a warmer amber cast when you stand at the other end. Every stem and tendril over that field is ivory or cream, so the pattern reads as light on dark rather than the usual reverse, and the effect is unusually luminous for a gold rug. The borders invert the balance: a broad cream to ivory ground with the flowers picked out in soft brown, sage, gold and small touches of tomato red. Two accent colors carry the corners and the medallion. A muted coral, somewhere between salmon and terracotta, fills the 4 spandrels and the ring of hearts at the center, and a pale sky blue runs the oval field outline, the medallion core and small detail work in the border flowers. Dark chocolate brown does the outlining throughout, on leaf edges, cloud bands and palmette hearts, which is what keeps the design crisp at a distance. Nothing here is loud. It is a warm neutral rug with enough color movement to hold a room of cream, camel, walnut or soft green.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This piece is honestly made in China, woven on a cotton foundation in silk by workshops that have specialized in fine hand-knotted silk work for decades and that build their patterns on the classical Tabriz repertoire. The back photograph, with a ruler laid across the border, shows what that means in practice: very small, very regular knots, tight straight rows and clean color changes, the weave density you need before a design of this scale can carry a vine this thin and a medallion with 8 nested rings. A coarser weave simply cannot resolve the detail. The pile is clipped low and slightly raised around the outlines, which is what gives the motifs their carved relief and lets the silk sheen shift as you walk past.
