8' x 10' Pakistani Rug | French Savonnerie Ivy Medallion | Emerald Green, Gold & Ivory

Most hand-knotted rugs in this price range repeat a formula. This 8' x 10' does not. It is a hand-knotted reading of the French Savonnerie manner: a deep emerald green ground, a single round medallion in ivory and camel gold floating just above center, and real ivy, drawn naturalistically, climbing in from all 4 corners as if the rug had been left outdoors for a season. The wool is spun fine and clipped low enough that the leaf outlines stand slightly proud of the ground, so the drawing reads in relief as well as in color. It is recent, in perfect condition with full pile throughout, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The close-up shots of the ivory and gold medallion were taken at a low angle, so light and shadow shift across the field and some areas look darker or warmer than others. That is the pile lying in different directions and catching the light, not staining, fading or wear. Viewed flat from above, as in the first photograph, the medallion reads evenly. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves us.

Design and Motifs

The composition is built on a single round medallion set on an open field, the hallmark of the French Savonnerie plan. That medallion is ringed by a narrow banded edge worked like a ribbon of dentils, punctuated at 4 points by small rosettes, and filled with dense scrolling acanthus and rinceaux that curl back on themselves in gold, olive and brown. An inner oval frame sits inside it, enclosing a quieter panel of upright leaf sprays. Over all of that drapes a branch of ivy in teal and pale blue, deliberately crossing the formal scrollwork so the ordered part of the design looks overgrown. The field carries the same conceit at full scale: silvery ivy leaves with charcoal veins climb in loose, uncounted clusters from every corner, never mirroring each other exactly. A thin gold line runs as the only border, and at the 4 corners it resolves into golden ivy brackets with rosette bosses, so the rug frames itself without the weight of a conventional multi-band surround.

The Emerald Green, Gold and Ivory Palette

The ground is a saturated bottle emerald that behaves differently depending on where you stand: nearly black where the pile leans away from the light, a clear jewel green where it leans into it. Against that depth, the ivy foliage is worked in a graded range of frosted silver blue, celadon and pale sage, each leaf shaded from a light tip down to a darker base with a charcoal stem, which is what gives the field its dappled, three dimensional look. The medallion swings the palette warm, running through ivory, cream, camel and honey gold with olive leaf work and chocolate brown outlining, and the ivy that spills over it turns a deeper teal blue so it stays legible against the gold. Gilded ivy in pure ochre marks the corner brackets. The result is one of the more unusual emerald green area rugs we carry, warm and cool at once, and the ivory fringe and side finish keep the edges crisp.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This piece was made in Pakistan, where the best contemporary workshops weave European cartoons to a standard that rewards close inspection. The back photograph tells the story: tight, even rows of knots on a cotton foundation, straight selvages, and a knot count fine enough to carry the curved acanthus line and the shaded leaf tips without the drawing breaking into steps. Fine wool takes the dye cleanly here, which is why the greens hold their depth and the golds keep their luster, and the low, lightly sculpted clip lets the outlines sit in slight relief. As an Oriental rug with a French design vocabulary, it sits comfortably with both traditional and modern furniture, and at this scale it works as one of the more distinctive 8 x 10 area rugs available in a dark green ground.
