8' x 11'1" Modern Indian Rug | Tan and Ivory Wool and Silk | Transitional All-Over Floral

This is a quiet rug that rewards a second look. At 8' x 11'1" it covers a full seating group, and the whole field is worked tone on tone: a soft tan ground with an ivory and cream floral network drawn over it in wool, with silk used for the outlines and the small filled shapes so the pattern lifts and shifts as you walk past it. The pile is clipped low and even, the drawing is crisp right into the corners, and the cotton fringe is clean and unworn. It is brand new and in perfect condition, hand-knotted on a cotton foundation, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming the weave, the wool and silk pile and the origin. This is one of those neutral pieces that lets the furniture do the talking while still being an unmistakably handmade floor covering.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The first overhead photograph was shot under cooler studio light and reads slightly grey. The close-up and floor photographs are the more accurate guide to the true color, which is a warm tan ground with ivory and soft gold detail. Nothing about the rug itself differs between the shots.

Design and Motifs

The field carries an all-over repeat rather than a central medallion, which is what makes the design read as transitional instead of classical. Slender vines climb the length of the rug and carry small blossoms, buds and serrated leaves, and set within them are rows of large teardrop forms, part boteh and part cypress cone, each one filled with a fine lattice so the interior looks woven rather than solid. The repeat mirrors along the vertical axis, so the two halves answer each other. Framing it are 5 bands: a broad main border of ivory rosettes and palmettes linked by leafy scroll, flanked by narrow guard stripes of running vine and a plain outer band that finishes the rug cleanly. Nothing is crowded, and the negative space is as much a part of the drawing as the ornament.

A Tan Ground With Ivory and Silk Highlights

The ground is a warm mid tan, closer to mushroom or greige than to yellow beige, and it holds steady across the whole 8' x 11'1" surface. Over it the ornament is worked in 2 related tones: a cool chalky ivory for the flower heads, leaves and the filled boteh interiors, and a warmer honey gold for the vine stems and outlines, which is where most of the silk sits. Because silk reflects light differently from wool, those outlines flare bright from one direction and settle back to a soft champagne from the other, giving the flat surface a low relief, carved appearance. The border picks up the same trio, with ivory rosettes sitting almost white against the tan. For anyone shopping beige and ivory area rugs, this palette works with oak, walnut, linen and brass alike.

Woven in India: Origin and Weaving Quality

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this piece shows why. The knotting is fine and regular, the vine lines stay smooth through their curves instead of stepping, and the pile is sheared low enough that the silk detail stays legible up close, which only happens when the knot count supports the drawing. The cotton foundation is tight and the rug lies flat straight out of the roll, with even selvedges and a straight, well finished fringe. It belongs in the broader family of the hand-knotted Oriental rug tradition while sitting comfortably in a current interior, and it is one of the cleanest neutrals among our 8 x 11 area rugs.
