8' x 8'5" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Peach & Olive All Over Floral Square | New, Never Used

This is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug woven in Jaipur, India, in a near square 8' x 8'5" format that is genuinely hard to find on the market. The wool pile is knotted on a cotton foundation, the handle is firm without being stiff, and the pile has the slightly waxy sheen of good hand-spun wool rather than the flat look of a machine product. Nothing about it is worn: this piece is new, never used, and the ends and sides are as tight as the day it came off the loom. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity that records the origin, materials, size and hand-knotted construction, so the paperwork matches what your hands can already feel.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a balanced all over floral design rather than a central medallion, which is exactly what a square format wants: the pattern reads correctly from all 4 sides and nothing looks off center when you walk around it. Large 8 petal rosettes alternate with serrated star blossoms and leafy palmettes, all linked by thin curling vines and small rosette buds that fill the ground without crowding it. Look closely at the drawing in the close-up photographs and you can see the classical vocabulary at work: outlined cartouche shapes around some blossoms, split leaves turning back on themselves, and tiny paired leaf tips picked out in a lighter shade. The main border is a broad olive ground carrying big wine red palmettes and rosettes, held between narrow guard stripes of peach with small flowerheads and fine burgundy outline lines. The corners are resolved properly, with the border pattern turning cleanly instead of being chopped off, which is the mark of a drawn cartoon followed carefully by the weavers.

Color Palette

The field is a warm peach that leans toward salmon and apricot in direct light and softens to a dusty blush in the shade, with gentle horizontal variation across the ground that reads as depth rather than inconsistency. Against it the drawing works in a muted olive and sage green, deep wine burgundy, honey gold and camel brown, with small ivory and cream highlights inside the rosette centers that keep the whole surface lively. The main border flips the balance, putting olive green in the majority so the peach field is framed and contained, and the burgundy outline stripes give the composition its crisp edges. Browns and golds bridge the peach and the green, so the palette never splits into two competing halves. The cotton fringe at both ends is a natural ivory, and the sides are finished in the same soft peach as the outer guard band. This is a warm, low contrast color scheme that sits well with wood floors, cream plaster, leather and brass.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the great hand-knotting centers of northern India, and India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now being made. We say that with confidence: the looms are large, the wool is well spun, the dye houses are disciplined, and the master weavers work from properly drawn cartoons in the traditional manner. This piece shows all of it. The back photograph reveals even, regular knotting with straight rows and no pulled or waisted areas, the selvages are firm, and the pile is clipped to a medium height that shows the outlines of the drawing sharply while leaving enough wool for decades of use. A square this size is a specialist order, woven for a specific room shape rather than for stock, which is why square hand-knotted rugs in wool turn up far less often than standard rectangles.
