8' x 9'11" Oushak Design Rug | Light Blue and Gold All Over Floral | New, Made in India

Light blue grounds are hard to find in hand-knotted work, and harder still in a size this usable. This 8' x 9'11" rug is hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, with a soft blue field carried edge to edge by gold, camel and olive florals and framed by a wide beige and gold border. It is new, never used, and in perfect condition, so the pile stands full and the colors are exactly as woven. It is a true Oriental rug in the classic sense, and one of the easiest pieces to live with among our 8x10 hand-knotted rugs. Every rug ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming its size, materials and hand-knotted construction.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The faint horizontal lines across the field in a few of the close-up photos are fold marks from pallet storage. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. They relax out once the rug is laid flat, and every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is a relaxed Oushak all over floral pattern rather than a central medallion layout, which is why the field reads calm from any direction. Large fan-shaped palmettes sit on a loose grid, separated by broad serrated leaves, small 8 petal rosettes and curling vine tips that trail off into open ground. Three big crowned palmettes run down the center line, with half-drop repeats answering them on either side, and the spacing is generous enough that the blue ground stays the dominant element instead of the pattern. The main border is a wide beige band carrying alternating lobed quatrefoil cartouches and blue-centered rosettes joined by a thin vine, bracketed by narrow gold guard stripes with a running rosette and leaf meander. Corners resolve cleanly, the selvedge is wrapped in blue to match the field, and the plain ivory fringe is full and evenly tied at both ends.

A Light Blue Field With Beige and Gold Drawing

The field is a pale, slightly dusty light blue with a natural abrash that shifts between a soft powder tone and a cooler slate cast depending on where the light falls, visible as gentle horizontal banding in the close-up photographs. Against it the pattern is worked almost entirely in warm neutrals: wheat gold, antique brass, honey, camel and a muted olive green, with small accents of dusty rose, pale coral and ivory inside the rosette centers and a few dark brown outlines that give the palmettes definition. The wide border runs a creamy beige to light gold that lifts the whole piece and keeps the blue from reading cold, while the thin guard stripes are a deeper saffron gold. Nothing in the palette is saturated, so the rug sits comfortably with oak, walnut, linen upholstery, brass and both warm and cool wall colors. Buyers shopping for a blue rug that still reads neutral tend to land here.

Made in India in the Oushak Tradition

This rug was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now produced, and the quality on this piece backs that up. The Oushak vocabulary of oversized palmettes, open fields and soft neutral dye work has been interpreted by Indian workshops for decades, and the weavers who do it well combine the historic drawing with modern spinning and dyeing control. Turn the rug over, as in the back photographs, and the knot rows are straight and consistent, the cotton warp is clean and the pattern is legible from the reverse, which is the honest test of how carefully a rug was woven. The wool pile is hand-spun and lightly lustrous, cut at a medium height that handles traffic in a dining room or living room while keeping the motifs crisp. At 8' x 9'11" it is woven square and lies flat, a workshop-grade contemporary piece rather than a production copy.

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
