9'10" x 13'2" Persian Tabriz Rug | Navy Medallion, Ivory Floral Border | Signed Cartouche

This is a full room size Persian Tabriz, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and finished at a 3/8" pile that still stands up clean and even across all 13'2" of its length. The weaver signed the piece in a small woven cartouche set into the ivory border, which is the mark of a workshop rug rather than an anonymous village commission, and the drawing throughout backs that up. Condition is excellent, with full pile, straight sides and original ends. Design and Motifs

The composition is the classic Tabriz workshop formula, drawn with real confidence. A lobed central medallion sits dead center, built in concentric layers: a salmon and tan outer frame of curling arabesques, a ring of turquoise and teal leafwork inside that, and an ivory core holding a small 8 petal rosette with deep red accents. Slender pendants run off the top and bottom points of the medallion into the open field. The 4 corners carry stepped ivory spandrels filled with scrolling vine and rosettes, their edges cut in the angular, notched profile that Tabriz drafters favor. The navy field between medallion and spandrels is not left empty, it is populated with fine floral sprays, palmettes, split leaves and delicate feathered tendrils that read almost like embroidery at close range. The border system runs 5 bands deep, with a broad ivory main border of palmettes and shrub motifs alternating with rosettes, flanked by burgundy and navy guard stripes and a narrow reciprocal outer edge.

The Navy and Ivory Palette

The field is a deep indigo navy that shifts with the light, reading close to black in shadow and opening into a clear blue where the pile catches the sun. Against it the ivory borders do the heavy lifting, throwing a bright frame around the whole rug and keeping a piece of this scale from feeling heavy underfoot. The medallion is the warm counterweight: soft salmon and tan rising to turquoise and sea green at its heart, with a clean ivory center. Scattered through the field and borders are rose pink, brick red, deep burgundy, olive and soft sage green, plus small touches of gold and pale blue in the corner rosettes. Tabriz Weaving and Quality

Tabriz sits in the far northwest of Persia and has been the country's most organized weaving center for centuries, the place where professional drafters, dyers and master weavers work as a workshop rather than as individual households. Fineness there is measured in Raj, the count of knots across a gereh of roughly 2.75 in of width, and the back of this rug shows what that discipline produces: rows tight and even, the knot nodes small and uniform, no drift in the line as the pattern climbs. That density is why the curved line here holds its shape, since flowing vinework and a properly circular medallion simply cannot be drawn at a coarse count.
