This is a signed, room-filling Persian Kashan rug measuring 9'10" x 14'5", hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and finished in excellent condition with an even, close-cropped pile. The weaver left a small woven cartouche in the upper border, the mark of a workshop piece rather than an anonymous commercial run, and the drawing throughout backs that up: the vines are continuous, the corners resolve cleanly, and the medallion sits true to the center on a 14-foot length. Design and Motifs

The layout is the classic Kashan formula executed at full scale. A lobed brick red medallion holds the center, stepped with pointed finials at both ends and built around an ivory inner cartouche that frames a light blue rosette. Radiating out from it, the navy field carries a dense all over lattice of curving vines, palmettes, serrated leaves and small carnation and rose heads, each blossom outlined so it separates cleanly from the dark ground. The 4 corners carry ivory spandrels with the same vinework in reverse, giving the field its oval silhouette. The main border is a wide brick red band of alternating palmettes and rosettes on a scrolling stem, flanked on both sides by light blue guard borders of small paired flowers and a final ivory outer stripe. Nothing in the drawing is filler; the repeat shifts just enough from unit to unit to keep the eye moving across all 14 feet.

Navy Ground, Brick Red Medallion, Ivory Relief

The field is a deep inky navy, close to midnight, and it does the heavy lifting: it absorbs light rather than reflecting it, which is why the palette laid over it reads so brightly. The medallion and border share a warm brick red with a slight terracotta cast, not a cold crimson, and the ivory in the medallion core and the spandrels gives the composition its breathing room. Through the field you get a full secondary range, powder and cornflower blue in the small blossoms, sage and olive in the leaf work, soft gold and ochre in the palmette centers, and dusty rose and pale pink in the flower heads.
